BOSTON - The 2001 edition of the Boston University field hockey team gets its season underway as it travels to eastern Virginia to take on two Top-20 opponents in William & Mary on Friday (Sept. 7) and Old Dominion on Sunday (Sept. 9).
The Terriers and Tribe meet on Friday in a 4:00 p.m. game in Williamsburg. Last season William & Mary finished the season ranked 12th in the STX/NFHCA Coaches Poll. On Sunday, B. U. faces top-ranked and defending national champion ODU at 1:30 p.m. in Norfolk. The Lady Monarchs finished the 2000 season with a 25-1 record.
Terriers picked second in America East Preseason Poll The defending conference champion B. U. field hockey team was chosen second in the 2001 America East preseason poll, voted on by the league's coaches. The Terriers received three of a possible 11 first-place votes and 71 points overall, four shy of preseason favorite New Hampshire.
Terriers Return Five All-Conference and All-Rookie Selections The Terriers return their leading scorer from last season in junior Jane Rogers. The Watertown, Mass. native was a First Team All-Conference and Third Team All-America selection last year after scoring eight goals and 12 assists for 28 points. Additionally, Second Team All-Conference defender Felicia Cappabianca will anchor the defense, and fellow Second Teamer at goalkeeper Susan Harrington returns in net. Whitney Peabody and Lindsey Domers, who each were named to the America East All-Rookie Team, will strengthen the Terriers attack as well.
Terrier Newcomers Look to Provide Boost in 2001 The freshman class for 2001, according to head coach Sally Starr, will be ready to contribute immediately this season. Meredith Long brings with her a style which fits well into the "B. U. system"; Kara Rossi's athleticism will allow her to play many different roles for the team; Adrienne Scibilia will challenge the Terrier defense for playing time from game one; and at 5-foot-8, Lauren Vendetti will present opposing teams' with match-up problems. Dalinda Banuelos, a transfer from Stanford, comes to B. U. with the ability to make an instant impression on the team. The sophomore has played on the U. S. National Under-16 and Under-19 teams and has the experience to help offset the loss of last year's seniors.
Harrington is Rock-Solid in Goal for the Terriers Harrington, a junior, played every minute of every game last season and will see the bulk of the playing time this season as well. Last year she compiled a 16-8-0 record while posting a 1.39 goals against average and a .766 save percentage. She was the second-ranked goalie in the conference and was 21st in the country in goals against average.
