Field Hockey Dominates Black Bears, 4-1, In Conference Opener
October 12, 2002 | Field Hockey
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Boston University field hockey team picked a good time to play its best all-around game of the season as it defeated the No. 19 University of Maine in the conference opener for both teams at MIT's Jack Barry Field on Saturday, Oct. 12. It was the Terriers' first victory over a Top 20 team in four tries this season.
B. U. (7-5, 1-0 America East) had the better of play in the opening minutes of the game, which was played in a driving rain. The Terriers controlled the action with an attacking style that paid off 10 minutes into the contest, when junior midfielder/back Whitney Peabody (Hamilton, Mass.) sent a pass across the circle in front of Maine goalkeeper Jaye Lance, which junior midfielder Erin Burke-Webster (Rochester, N. Y.) tipped into the cage to give the Terriers a 1-0 edge.
The Terriers doubled their advantage when junior midfielder Dalinda Banuelos (Escondido, Calif.) made a strong pass along the right baseline to junior forward Celeste Hubbard (Detroit, Mich.), who forced the ball past Lance 17:39 into the game.
Seven minutes later, Banuelos found herself streaking down the right side with the ball. After an initial shot was saved by Lance, Banuelos gathered the rebound and beat the junior goalkeeper on the right side to give B. U. a 3-0 lead with 10:45 left in the first half.
Five minutes into the second half, Hubbard found Peabody alone to the right of Black Bear goalkeeper Colbey Smith, who replaced Lance to begin the second half, and Peabody smashed the goal past Smith to extend the B. U. lead to 4-0.
Maine (9-2, 0-1 America East), which had won nine games in a row entering the game against B. U., broke into the scoring column with a goal from sophomore midfielder Amie Dubois at 48:26 to make it 4-1.
"It was a huge win for us," said Terrier head coach Sally Starr. "In the first half we played excellent attacking hockey. Dalinda was outstanding, as was Whitney. Our forward play was tremendous the entire game."
B. U. senior goalkeeper Susan Harrington (Tuftonboro, N. H.) made five saves before being replaced by sophomore Jodie Gardner (Unionville, Conn.) with 9:10 left in the game. Gardner did not record a save.
Maine's Lance made three first-half saves, while Smith was credited with four stops in the second half.
With the win, B. U. avenges the 7-1 loss that Maine put on the Terriers last season.
The Terriers don't have much time to enjoy their victory, as they travel to Storrs, Conn. on Sunday, Oct. 13, to play No. 15 Princeton at the University of Connecticut. Game time at UConn's Sherman Complex is 1 p.m.
