The Terrier women's lacrosse team finished with a 3-1 record at the Wildcat Fall Classic at the University of New Hampshire on Saturday (October 13th).
Led by senior tri-captain Kristin Abruzzese (Medford, NJ/ Shawnee), the Terriers twice defeated host UNH and Vermont once, with their only loss coming to Boston College.
"Kristin was on fire for the day," said head coach Liza Shoemaker.
Abruzzese, who ranks fifth in the Terrier record book with 85 goals and 105 points for her career, led the Terriers in scoring at UNH.
"They proved that they are a coachable team," said Shoemaker. "Whether we win or lose, we know we're going in the direction we need to be going in."
The all-day fall season tournament gave the players a chance to see a quality amount of playing time, and it allowed the coaches to try different looks for the team.
"All three goalies played very well," said Shoemaker. "Lauren Beatty (Plainview, NY/Bethpage) had a clutch save off an 8-meter against Vermont."
Senior tri-captain Brooke Barrett (Bel Air, MD/ John Carroll) and rookie Anne Sheridan (Baltimore, MD/Roland Park) shared minutes along with Beatty in the cage.
Senior tri-captain Gabby Juocys (Rochester, MI/ Sacred Heart) led the young defense to the two wins over conference rival UNH.
"Gabby played real well and stepped up her play in the midfield," said Shoemaker.
The attack was paced by Abruzzese, senior Erika Hergenroeder (Annapolis, MD/Severna Park), and sophomores Sasha Lang (Cornish, NH/Kimball Union Academy) and Kelly Trahon (Needham, MA/Needham).
"Sasha is becoming a powerhouse player," said the coach. "She was real active on the attack and helped us through the midfield."
Shoemaker commended Hergenroeder, senior Molly Byrne (Lake Placid, NY/Annandale, VA) and freshman Alyssa Trudel (Shoreham, VT/Middlebury Union) who shared responsibility of the draw and were impacts in the midfield transition.
The Terriers will have an opportunity to avenge their loss to Boston College this Wednesday, when they host the Eagles at 7pm at Nickerson Field. The match-up marks the first competitive game to be played by the lacrosse team on the new FieldTurf surface that was finished last May.
