Second-Half Effort Too Late Against Huskies, 2-1
October 23, 2002 | Men's Soccer
BOSTON - The Boston University men's soccer team rallied against an early two-goal deficit but came up short, falling to Northeastern, 2-1, at Parsons Field on Wednesday night.
With the loss, the Terriers (7-4-3, 2-1-1) have their 12-game America East regular-season unbeaten streak snapped. Before tonight, the Terriers had not lost a conference regular-season game since falling 2-0 to Hofstra on Oct. 5, 2001.
The Huskies (8-6-2, 5-1-0) jumped on the board early, as Michael Cipriano blasted a shot past Terrier senior goalkeeper Matt Smith (Lanchester, England) at 7:02 in the first half. Bennie Prueski earned the assist.
Cipriano returned the favor, assisting on a goal by Prueski at 21:43 that gave Northeastern a 2-0 advantage.
Northeastern held a 5-4 advantage on shots and a 6-4 lead on corner kicks going into the break.
Trailing 2-0 in the 69th minute of play, the Terriers mounted an offensive charge. Junior midfielder Andrew Dorman (Flintshire, Wales) lofted a corner kick high into the box. Senior midfielder Anthony D'Angelo (Tewksbury, MA) timed his leap and fired a header high into the net past Huskies' goalkeeper Sergio Saccoccio at 69:52.
With the lead cut to 2-1, the Terriers kept the pressure on the Huskies in their defensive zone. B.U. nearly tied the game in the 87th minute of play when Dorman again sent a corner into the box. Sophomore midfielder Federico Bianchi (Pacific Palisades, CA) played the ball from the goal line and slid it past Saccoccio but a handball call negated the score.
Saccoccio made six saves while earning the win. Smith made two saves for the Terriers.
B.U. had the advantage in shots, 8-7, and corner kicks, 10-7, in the game.
The Terriers play the second game in their two-game road trip when they travel to University of New Hampshire to take on the Wildcats this Saturday.
