Field Hockey Keeps Rhode Island Winless With 2-0 Win
October 6, 2002 | Field Hockey
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Boston University field hockey team extended its season-best winning streak to three games, defeating the University of Rhode Island, 2-0, at MIT's Jack Barry Field on Sunday, Oct. 6.
Junior midfielder Lindsey Domers (Voorhees, N. J.) opened the scoring when she took a rebound off of Rhode Island junior goalkeeper Danielle Dangoia and knocked it into the back of the cage at 17:41 to give B. U. a 1-0 lead.
Rhode Island (0-11) got its best offensive opportunities of the game late in the first half. After playing the majority of the half in the midfield and the Terriers' offensive end, the Rams drew three straight penalty corners with less than four minutes to go in the half, but failed to complete any of the chances.
After a tight first half in which B. U. had a 4-1 advantage in shots, the Terriers opened up its offense to the tune of 15 shots and nine penalty corners in the second half. In comparison, the Rams had just two shots and one corner after the intermission.
Head coach Sally Starr called a timeout with 9:37 to go in the game and made an adjustment that led to the Terriers' second goal of the game 35 seconds later. Junior midfielder Dalinda Banuelos (Escondido, Calif.) took the ball from deep in the right corner and dribbled into the circle, beating Dangoia to the right post with a shot that gave B. U. an insurance goal with 9:02 left.
"I thought we passed the ball beautifully," said Starr. "We did a much better job of passing the ball after we called the timeout and it led to our second goal. We had a lot more quality scoring chances today than we did yesterday against Yale [in a 1-0 Terrier win]."
Dangoia made 10 saves in goal, nine of which came in the second half. Senior goalkeeper Susan Harrington (Tuftonboro, N.H.) made two saves. She posted her second straight shutout, and the 10th of her career.
The Terriers (6-5) open their America East Conference schedule when they host the University of Maine on Saturday, Oct. 12 at Jack Barry Field. Game time is 1 p.m.
NOTES: Former Terrier field hockey players Michelle Barnard and Vera Schoenfeld were honored at halftime after being inducted into the Boston University Athletic Hall of Fame on Saturday night, October 5.
