Terriers Host Istrobanka Locomotiva In Exhibition Game

Tonight's Game The Terriers meet team Istrobanka Lokomotiva, a Slovakian Professional team. Tonight’s game is the fourth game in a 10-game exhibition tour for Istrobanka. In its three collegiate exhibition games, Istrobanka is 1-2. Its biggest defeat came in a 91-54 loss to the University of Maine on Nov. 6. Istrobanka earned its first victory on Sunday (Nov. 10) in a 74-72 win over New Hampshire. Zuzana Kozacikova came off the bench to lead the team with 22 points on 11-for-13 shooting from the field in 28 minutes. Silva Borcinova added 11 points and a team-high five rebounds.
Scouting Istrobanka Team Istrobanka Lokomotiva is a European basketball club from Bratislava, Slovak Republic. Founded in 1950, the club twice finished second (1957, 1958) in the Czecholslovakian National Championship. In 2002, Istrobanka finished third in the Slovak League. Leading the team are Slovak Republic National Team members Lucia Borcinova, a 6-3 center, Renata Plavkova, a 5-9 guard, and Silvia Borcenova, a 6-0 forward.
Terriers Among the Nation’s Top 20 Most Improved Teams After finishing with a 10-19 mark in 2000-01, the Terriers made great strides last season, completing the 2001-02 campaign with a 17-11 overall record. The dramatic improvement, a difference of 7.5 games, was the 19th greatest win-loss improvement among women’s college basketball teams for 2001-02.
Terriers Boast Best Record in Seven Years The 2001-02 regular season saw the Terriers win 17 times, the most wins since B.U. went 18-10 in 1994-95. Ten of last year’s victories came in conference play. Not since the 1987-88 season, when B.U. went 12-2 in the Seaboard Conference, had the Terriers had 10 league victories.
Terhune Leads Terriers to Team Record for Free Throws Attempted In A Season As a freshman, Katie Terhune set a program record for free throws made in a season with 121. Last season as a sophomore, Terhune bested her own record, sinking 141 from the line. Terhune, who accounted for more than one-quarter of the team’s free throw attempts, led the Terriers in 2001-02 to a single-season record 661 free throws attempts. The Terriers, who connected on 445 of their chances, were 24 shy of tying the record for free throws made of 469 set during the 2000-01 season.
Terriers Set New Record For Accuracy From Three-Point Range Ranking 34th in the nation in three-point field goal accuracy, the Terriers set a program record with a .365 three-point field goal percentage. Last year, leading the America East as a team from behind the arc, the Terriers hit 134 of their 367 attempts. In B.U.’s 93-77 win over cross-town rival Harvard on Nov. 20, the Terriers hit a season-high 66.7 percent (8-of-12) from three-point range, with Alison Argentieri making 6-of-7 from behind the line.
Five-Game Win Streak Was Team’s Longest In Seven Seasons After losing their season-opener to South Florida on Nov. 17, the Terriers rallied to win five straight games, the team’s longest winning streak since the 1994-95 season. During the stretch, the Terriers defeated Delaware State and Lehigh in the Christmas City Classic Tournament. The two wins earned B.U. its first tournament championship since December 29, 1989, when it defeated Colgate, 72-59, to win the LaSalle Invitational Tournament. Katie Terhune earned Most Valuable Player honors and was joined on the Christmas City Classic All-Tournament Team by classmate Marisa Moseley.
America East Among Nation’s Top Conferences According to CollegeRPI.com, which ranks teams and conferences using a mathematic formula involving win-loss record and strength of schedule among other variables, the America East Conference finished the 2001-02 season ranked 13th out of 32 conferences. Terriers Return Majority of Scoring Punch For the 2002-03 season, the Terriers return 84.6 percent of their point production from last year, including the top five scorers. Katie Terhune, the Terriers’ scoring leader for the past two seasons, returns for her junior season with 939 career points, 61 shy of the 1,000-point milestone. In addition, the Terriers return their leaders in field goal percentage in Larissa Parr, three-pointers made in Alison Argentieri, and three-point accuracy in Courtney Jones.
Norris Dominates In The Paint As a freshman in 2001-02, forward Adrienne Norris became the first Terrier rookie in 12 years to lead the team in rebounding, averaging 6.4 boards per game. Norris earned America East All-Rookie Team honors for her effort. Jill Sosnak was the last rookie to lead the team in rebounding, totaling 216 rebounds during the 1990-91 campaign. The 6-foot-2 Norris started in 15 games in 2001-02, and was honored on Jan. 28th as the league’s Rookie of the Week. Norris and classmate Larissa Parr were the only two Terriers to appear in all 27 games last season.
McKeon Enjoys First Winning Season With its 76-61 win over Northeastern on Feb. 14, B.U. ensured its first winning season in seven years and first winning record under head coach Margaret McKeon. In three years with McKeon at the helm, the Terriers have improved from a 10th-place finish in the America East in 1999-00 to a second-place finish last season.
McKeon Signs Five-Year Contract Extension On April 23, Margaret McKeon signed a five-year contract extension which will keep the coach at B.U. through the 2006-07 season. McKeon has compiled a 35-51 overall record in three seasons at B.U. During her debut in 1999-2000, the Terriers went 8-21. In 2000-01, the Terriers improved to 10-19. The 10 wins were the most by a B.U. team in five years. Last season, McKeon’s squad improved from an eighth-place finish in the America East Conference in 2000-01 to a second-place finish and a 10-6 America East record. The 10 victories were the most wins in league play by B.U. in 13 years.
