Terrier Field Hockey Falls To Drexel In ECAC Semifinal
November 16, 2002 | Field Hockey
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Boston University freshman forward Natalie DiSabato (New Albany, Ohio) scored the first goal of the game with 23:43 left in the first half, but Drexel University followed with three unanswered goals, leading the Dragons to a 3-1 win over the Terriers in an ECAC Field Hockey Championship semifinal at Yale's Johnson Field on Saturday, Nov. 16.
B. U. ends its season with an 11-10 overall record. Drexel (11-8) advances to face the winner of the Dartmouth/Yale semifinal at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 17.
B. U. was without the services of two of its most formidable overall players, as sophomore midfielder Erin Burke-Webster (Rochester, N. Y.) and junior forward Whitney Peabody (Hamilton, Mass.) missed the game due to injury.
The game, contested in a cold, driving rain, started out well for the Terriers, who were seeded second in the Championship. They got out to the early 1-0 lead after junior forward Celeste Hubbard (Detroit, Mich) assisted on DiSabato's goal 11:17 into the contest.
Drexel, the third seed, evened the score after the Dragons' leading scorer, Kristina Backenstose, got a touch on a Julie Gahman free hit into the circle with 12:06 left in the first half. With just 1:00 remaining in the half, Caliann Bogovic scored the first of her two goals to make the score 2-1 going into halftime.
Bogovic provided the Dragons with an unassisted insurance goal with 19:55 left to send DU to its second straight ECAC final.
Each team was credited with seven shots. Hubbard led the Terriers with three shots. Senior goalkeeper Susan Harrington (Tuftonboro, N. H.), making the final start in her impressive collegiate career, made one save. Drexel's Katie Dougherty made four stops.
