BOSTON - The Boston University women's basketball team rallied from a 27-point second-half deficit to pull within two with eight seconds remaining, but a pair of free throws from Harvard's Jessica Holsey sealed a 78-74 victory for the Crimson on Tuesday night at Case Gymnasium.
Harvard's Hana Peljto scored a game-high 25 points and tied a game-high with 10 rebounds. Junior guard Katie Terhune (Port Murray, NJ) led the Terriers with 19 points, including 10 during the second half rally.
Harvard (2-0, 0-0) and B.U. (0-2, 0-0) traded leads for the first 11 minutes of play, but, with 9:38 to go in the half, Terhune picked up her second foul of the game. With Terhune on the bench, Harvard outscored B.U., 28-12, and held a 47-33 lead at the break. Peljto tallied 12 points and Kate Ides added 10 to lead the Crimson in the first half.
Harvard committed 17 of its game-high 32 turnovers in the first half, but shot 64.0 percent from the field. The Terriers also had trouble taking care of the ball, committing 14 of their 22 turnovers at the half.
B.U. did not score its first field goal of the second half until Terhune sunk a jumper from the elbow as the Terriers trailed, 58-38, at 15:35.
A pair of lay-ups from Peljto and three-pointers from Dirkje Dunham and Holsey gave the Crimson its largest lead of the game, 65-38, at 13:49.
After struggling from the field for the first 27 minutes of the game, the Terriers finally found their stroke. B.U. hit eight-straight field goals over the next 8:36 and cut the lead to 71-58 with 3:16 remaining. Terhune had eight points and senior guard Alison Argentieri had six during the rally.
Argentieri drained a three-pointer from the left corner at 2:04 to cut the lead to 71-61 and a layup by sophomore forward Adrienne Norris (Delafield, WI) brought the Terriers to within single digits of the Crimson, 71-63, at 1:18.
Freshman guard Rachael Vanderwal (Stoney Creek, ONT) put the finishing touches on the Terrier run, driving the lane for a lay-up and a runner and sinking a three-pointer from the top of the key as B.U. trailed, 75-72, with 17 seconds to go in the game.
Despite a long jumper from Argentieri, the clock ran out on the Terriers as Holsey hit two free throws to clinch with win.
The Terriers outscored the Crimson, 36-13, during the final 13:49, as Harvard had just one field goal, a three-pointer from Tricia Trubridy at 11:53. Harvard's final 11 points came from the free throw line where the Crimson was 22-for-34 in the game.
Harvard held a 42-28 advantage on the boards.
Terhune led four Terriers in double-figure scoring. Norris had her first double-double of the season and third of her career with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Argentieri had 16 points while Vanderwal had 13.
Up next, the Terriers travel to Philadelphia to take on Saint Joseph's on Saturday, Nov. 30, at 2 p.m.
