Eight Field Hockey Terriers Named All-Conference
November 7, 2002 | Field Hockey
BOSTON - A total of eight Boston University field hockey players earned America East All-Conference honors in a vote of the league's coaches. Headlining the list were juniors Dalinda Banuelos (Escondido, Calif.) and Celeste Hubbard (Detroit, Mich.), who were named to the All-Conference First Team.
Junior Whitney Peabody (Hamilton, Mass.), sophomore Kara Rossi (North Salem, N. Y.), and senior goalkeeper Susan Harrington (Tuftonboro, N. H.) were selected to the Second Team, while freshmen Caitlyn Cassara (North Caldwell, N. J.), Colleen McClay (Mahopac, N. Y.), and Natalie DiSabato (New Albany, Ohio) earned All-Rookie Team honors.
Hubbard led the Terriers in scoring, tallying 11 goals and four assists for 26 points. Banuelos was second on the team in scoring with 10 goals and four assists for 24 points. It was the first All-Conference award for both.
It is the third All-Conference award for Harrington, who was a First Team selection in 2001 and a Second Team pick in 2000. Harrington wrapped up her career at B. U. by posting a 1.25 goals against average and an .824 save percentage this season.
It was the second All-Conference award for both Peabody and Rossi. They were each named to the All-Rookie Team, Peabody in 2000 and Rossi in 2001. Peabody came on strong after missing the first six games of the season due to injury. She finished the season with two goals and three assists for seven points. Rossi made the most of her move to the forward spot this season, scoring four goals and added two assists for 10 points.
Each of the three freshmen named to this year's All-Rookie Team were previously honored as Rookies of the Week by the conference. Cassara and DiSabato each garnered the award once, while McClay won the award twice.
The Terriers (11-9) completed the 2002 season as the 19th-ranked team in the country according to the STX/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll. Their 2-3 conference mark, however, kept them out of the America East Championship for the first time in 13 seasons. The team awaits a possible NCAA Tournament bid, and an ECAC Championship appearance is also a possibility for the Terriers.
