Orono, Maine - Despite leading for the first 38 minutes of the game, the B.U. women's basketball team could not hold off a late Maine charge, falling 67-64, on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 24) in front of 2,108 at Alfond Arena.
Julie Veilleux hit a jumper with 11 seconds remaining to give Maine a 65-63 advantage and Kim Corbett hit two free throws with two seconds to go to seal the victory for the Black Bears.
The Terriers led by as many as 10 with nine minutes to go, but connected on just 6-of-12 free throws in the final 8:23 of the game.
"We had our opportunities and we fell short today," said Terrier head coach Margaret McKeon. "But we're a young group. We'll move forward and look to improve."
Sophomore guard Katie Terhune (Port Murray, NJ) paced the Terriers with a game-high 26 points and had six rebounds. Senior guard Annie Tomasini (Boston, MA) was the Terriers' threat from long-range, hitting back-to-back three-pointers midway through the first half. Tomasini finished the game with nine points off the bench.
Terhune scored 11 of the Terriers first 14 points of the game, as B.U. built a 32-27 lead at halftime.
Terhune took over where she left off after the break, hitting her first three jumpers as B.U. led 38-31 at 17:07.
Heather Ernest got the Black Bears back on track, scoring eight of her team-high 14 points in the second half. Ernest scored off two lay-ups in the paint and hit two free throws to score six straight Black Bear points as Maine trailed 59-57 at 4:18.
Corbett hit two free throws to tie the game at 61-61 with three minutes to go. The Terriers would hit just 3-of-6 from the line and Veilleux's would hit two jumpers to give Maine the win.
"We lost the game at the free throw line," said McKeon. "We got to the line, we got the calls, but we didn't take advantage.
Freshman forward Larissa Parr (Eau Claire, WI) was a bright spot in the Terriers lineup, notching the first double-double of her career with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
With the loss, B.U. (16-10, 9-6) moves into a three-way tie for second place in the America East with Maine and Binghamton.
The Terriers play their regular-season finale at New Hampshire on Saturday (March 2).
