BOSTON - Boston University women's basketball head coach Margaret McKeon has signed a five-year contract extension that will keep the coach at B.U. through the 2006-07 season. The announcement was made today by Athletic Director Gary Stricker.
In her third season at the helm, McKeon guided the 2001-02 squad to a 17-11 record, and a second-place finish in the America East conference. The 17 wins were the most wins in seven years and ensured the first winning season in seven years.
"Margaret has worked very hard during the past three seasons to turn around the women's basketball program," said Stricker. "We are very pleased to know that she will be here to guide this team in the future."
McKeon has compiled a 35-51 overall record in three seasons at B.U. During her first season in 1999-2000, the Terriers went 8-21. In 2000-01, the Terriers improved to 10-19. The 10 wins were the most by a B.U. team in five years. This season, McKeon's squad improved from an eighth-place finish in the America East conference in 2000-01 to a second-place finish and a 10-7 conference record. The 10 victories were the most wins in conference play by B.U. in 13 years.
Before arriving at B.U., McKeon was the associate head coach and assistant coach at George Washington University from 1995-1999. McKeon began her coaching career as an assistant at Arizona State from 1991-93 and at Houston from 1993-1995.
A 1991 graduate of St. John's University, McKeon was an All-Conference and All-Academic selection.
The Terriers return all five starters and 11 players for the 2002-03 season, including First Team All-Conference selection Katie Terhune (Port Murray, NJ).
In addition, the Terriers will welcome Shannon Petranoff (Cranston, R.I./Cranston West), Katie Meinhart (San Francisco, CA/St. Ignatious Prep) and Rachel Vanderwal (Stoney Creek, ONT/Bishop Ryan Catholic) as the Class of 2006.
