Hergenroeder Receives Team MVP Honor at Annual Lacrosse Banquet

BOSTON - America East All-Conference First Team selection Ericka Hergenroeder (Annapolis, MD) was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2002 Boston University women's lacrosse team at the Terriers annual banquet on Monday night (May 13).
A senior midfielder, Hergenroeder scored a team-high 47 goals while leading the Terriers to their second America East title in three years. Hergenroeder ranked third in the league in goals (2.47 gpg) and fifth in the league in scoring (3.11 ppg) and caused turnovers (1.53 ctpg). A dynamic lefty who played both ends of the field, Hergenroeder led the team and ranked 30th in the nation in draw controls (2.16 dcpg) and was also second on the team in caused turnovers with 29.
In the Terrier Recordbook, Hergenroeder ranks fifth in career goals with 111 and sixth in scoring with 142 points. Hergenroeder's 47 goals in 2002 is the second-highest single-season total in program history. Hergenroeder ranks second in career draw controls (103), fifth in career caused turnovers (40), and eighth in career ground balls (125).
Following a breakout sophomore campaign, midfielder Hannah Cross (Concord, MA) was named Most Improved Player for the 2002 season. After appearing in just five games as a freshman, Cross played in 16 games of 19 games in 2002 and ranked seventh on the team in scoring with 10 goals and an assist. Cross led the team in shooting percentage, converting 58.8 percent of her shots while totaling 12 ground balls and seven draw controls.
Senior midfielder Molly Byrne (Lake Placid, NY) received the Female Student-Athlete of the Year award from Athletic Director Gary Strickler. Byrne started all 19 games for the Terriers, totaling 13 goals and seven assists on the attacking end while grabbing 28 ground balls and forcing 14 turnovers on the defense. Byrne will graduate from the College of Arts and Sciences with a degree in economics and a 3.78 grade point average.
Rising seniors Meghan Murphy (Davidsonville, MD), Briana Smith (Huntington, NY), and Tiffany Mullan (Phoenix, MD) and red-shirt junior Caroline Kelleher (Duxbury, MA) were named captains for the 2003 squad.
B.U. closed out the 2002 season with an 8-11 record. The Terriers return 16 players and six starters in 2003.
