Boston University women's lacrosse coach Liza Shoemaker announced the signing of two midfielders, an attacker and a defender today to compete beginning in the 2004 season.
Nicole Cooper, a midfield defender from Smithtown High School in Smithtown, N.Y., was selected to the U.S. High School All-American Team following an outstanding junior season. Last summer, Cooper was one of 117 players invited to try out for the U.S. Under-19 National Team, which will compete at the 2003 World Championships. Cooper was a member of the New York State Team I at the 2002 National Tournament. A two-sport varsity athlete, Cooper captained the Smithtown soccer team to a Suffolk County Championship this fall.
Stephanie Merkasis, a midfielder from Cicero North Syracuse High School in Syracuse, N.Y., is a four-year varsity lacrosse player. A two-time All-League selection, Merkasis played for the New York State Team I at the 2002 National Tournament and was invited to the National Player Development Camp last summer. In addition to lacrosse, Merkasis has also played varsity soccer, basketball, and tennis. Cicero North Syracuse is the alma mater of former Terriers Michelle Ellsworth ('00) and Karen Trait ('00).
Angie Martin, an attacker from Seton Keough High School in Baltimore, Md., led her high school to its best-ever record of 15-6 in 2002. A 2002 Academic All-American, Martin was a member of the Mid-Atlantic Team I at the 2002 National Tournament. Martin also plays varsity soccer and basketball. Last season, she led the basketball team to a 25-6 overall record and a number-one ranking from the Baltimore Sun.
A defender, Noelle Hopper attends Mt. Hebron High School in Ellicott City, Md., one of the nation's premier lacrosse programs. Mt. Hebron is the alma mater of current Terrier Liz Eberhart ('04) and former Terriers Chrissy Lombard ('01), B.U.'s all-time leading scorer, Kyle Rutkowski ('01), and Katie Nordhoff ('02). In Hopper's junior season, Mt. Hebron won its 10th Maryland State Championship in 11 years. Hopper also plays varsity field hockey for Mt. Hebron.
Hopper and Martin are teammates on the Hero's Lacrosse Club team that won back-to-back titles at the Vail Shootout on the Varsity High School Level in 2001 and 2002.
The Terriers' 2003 team will return six starters and 15 letterwinners from the 2002 squad that captured the America East Championship and finished with an 8-11 record.
