April 20, 2003 | Women's Lacrosse
BOSTON - Attacker Caroline Kelleher (Duxbury, MA) celebrated Senior Day with three goals to lead the Boston University women's lacrosse team to its first-ever victory over Syracuse, as the Terriers upset the 11th-ranked Orangewomen, 7-6, at Nickerson Field on Sunday, April 20.
With their eighth straight win, the Terriers improve to 10-4 overall and tie the program's single-season record for consecutive victories. Syracuse drops to 9-4 on the season.
Winner of the five previous meetings, Syracuse raced out to a 2-0 lead just eight minutes into the game off back-to-back goals from Monica Joines.
Freshman attacker Mary Beth Miller (Berlin, NJ) netted the Terriers' only goal of the first half off a free position shot to cut the deficit to 2-1 at 14:09.
Kim Wayne fired a free position shot past sophomore goalkeeper Anne Sheridan (Baltimore, MD) as the Orangewomen took a 3-1 lead into halftime.
Carla Gigon made seven of her nine saves in the first half to lead the Syracuse defense. To start the second half, Gigon turned the ball over in front of her own net and Kelleher collected the loose ball and scored for her first goal of the game at 28:42.
Freshman midfielder Danica Strutt (Pheonix, MD) converted a free position shot to knot the score, 3-3, at 27:10.
Driving past a pair of Syracuse defenders, freshman attacker Lindsay Lewis (Glenelg, MD) fired a left-handed shot past Gigon to give B.U. a 4-3 lead at 24:44.
Joines netted the third of her game-high four goals to tie the score at 23:47.
Off a feed from Strutt, Kelleher slipped inside the eight-meter and gave the lead back to the Terriers at 19:29.
Joines would tie the game for the final time off a free position goal at 13:56.
Less than a minute later, Kelleher rolled the crease and netted the game-winner with 13:16 left to play.
Junior midfielder Kylie Wagenet (Ithaca, NY) provided an insurance goal at 7:21 while Syracuse's Jessica Bell rounded out the game's scoring with a goal at 3:37. Sheridan made one save and the Terriers controlled time of possession to run out the clock on the Orangewomen.
Sheridan finished the game with nine saves, seven of which came in the second stanza.
Along with Sheridan, junior midfielder Sasha Lang (Cornish, NH) had a dominant performance on the defensive end. Despite missing 10 minutes of the second half after enduring a stick to the head, Lang had a game-high three caused turnovers and two ground balls.
B.U. forced 10 of Syracuse's 11 turnovers and had 21 of the game's 34 ground balls. The Terriers outshot the Orangewomen, 24-20, and held an 8-7 advantage in draw controls. Strutt had team-highs of four ground balls and three draw controls.
B.U. plays its final regular season games on the road against America East rivals Vermont and New Hampshire next weekend. The Terriers take on the Catamounts on Friday, April 25, and close out the regular season against the Wildcats on Sunday, April 27.
