BOSTON - Sophomore midfielder Alyssa Trudel (Shoreham, VT) and sophomore goalkeeper Anne Sheridan (Baltimore, MD) were named to the North Region All-American First Team as announced by regional chairperson Bonnie Rosen on Tuesday, May 20. In addition, junior defender Sasha Lang (Cornish, NH) and freshman attacker Lindsay Lewis (Glenelg, MD) were selected to the Regional All-American Second Team.
The foursome guided the Terriers (14-5, 5-0) to the 2003 America East Championship, the program's second-ever bid to the NCAA Tournament, and a 20th-ranking in the final IWLCA Coaches Poll.
The America East Player of the Year, Trudel led the conference and ranked fourth in the nation in scoring with a single-season program record 86 points off 44 goals and 42 assists. Trudel also ranked third in the nation in assists (2.21 apg) and 20th in the nation in draw controls (2.63).
After playing solely on the attacking end as a freshman, Trudel blossomed in her role as a midfielder in 2003, leading the team in both ground balls (44) and caused turnovers (39). She tallied at least one point in all but one game with 17 multiple-point games and 15 multiple-goal games.
In her first season as B.U.'s starting goalkeeper, Sheridan finished the season fifth in the nation in goals against average (7.02) and eighth in save percentage (.567) en route to a 14-5 record. Also named to the All-Conference First Team, Sheridan started all 19 games while collecting 18 ground balls and forcing eight turnovers.
Trudel and Sheridan join six other Terriers who were named to the North Region All-American First Team in previous years. Chris Fleming ('84) and Chrissy Lombard ('01) were three-time honorees, Gabby Juocys ('02) was twice named to the First Team, while Kristin Abruzzese ('02), Ericka Hergenroeder ('02), and Jen Manning ('98) were named to the First Team once during their careers.
Lang earned North Region All-American Second Team honors after serving as the Terriers' top markdown defender in 2003. Lang anchored a defensive corps that led the nation in lowest goals allowed per game (6.32). Starting all 19 games, Lang totaled 38 draw controls, 32 caused turnovers, and 32 ground balls on the defense while chipping in nine goals and one assist on the attack.
As the America East Defender of the Year, Lang becomes third defender in B.U. history to earn Regional All-American honors. Jean Cooney ('99) and Gabby Juocys ('02) are the other two defenders previously selected as Regional All-Americans.
The only freshman to be named a North Region All-American, Lewis contributed 40 goals and 12 assists to rank third on the team in scoring. Starting all 19 games, Lewis contributed at least one point in 17 games and finished the season with five consecutive multiple-point games. Lewis capped her rookie campaign with a team-high four goals against Dartmouth in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Often used as a connector in the midfield transition, Lewis also had 25 ground balls, 21 draw controls, and 14 caused turnovers.
Trudel, Sheridan, Lang, and Lewis are among nine starters and 21 letterwinners who will return for the 2004 season.
