Spuehler Earns Terriers' Fourth Consecutive America East Rookie Award
October 11, 2004 | Field Hockey
BOSTON - For the fourth consecutive week, a Boston University student-athlete has been named America East's field hockey Rookie of the Week. Freshman forward Pam Spuehler (Sudbury, Mass.) earned the award for the week ending Oct. 10 after tallying two goals and an assist as the Terriers earned a split of two Top 20 teams.
The Terriers played well against a pair of Top 20 teams, defeating the University of Maine, ranked No. 20 in last week's NFHCA national poll, 3-2 on Oct. 9 in an important America East contest, and, the next day, B.U. nearly knocked off No. 6 University of Connecticut, a team that had allowed only six goals all year. The Terriers played valiantly but lost, 4-3. It was the first time in 13 games that the Huskies had allowed more than two goals.
Overall, the Terriers have won six of their last eight games and sit atop the America East field hockey standings with Northeastern at 2-0.
Spuehler played a large part in both Terrier games last week. Against Maine, she tied the game at 1-1, sparking a Terrier rally by scoring the first of their three second-half goals. Sophomore forward Ashley Parker (Cheshire, Conn.) scored the game-winner on a penalty stroke with 8:11 remaining.
Against UConn, Speuhler again tied the game at 1-1 midway through the first half and assisted on the team's second goal, tipped in by freshman forward Sarah Shute (Lincolnville, Maine) just 1:23 later, giving B.U. a 2-1 lead.
Spuehler is third on the team in scoring with five goals and one assist for 11 points.
B.U. has proven that it has one of the best freshman classes in America East. It is the fourth straight week that a Terrier has earned at least a share of the conference's Rookie of the Week award. Shute earned the award on Sept. 20 and Oct. 4, while Spuehler shared the award with Albany's Kristen Holder on Sept. 27 and earned it outright this week.
The Terriers (7-5, 2-0 America East) wrap up their season-long four-game homestand when they host UMBC on Friday, Oct. 15 (7 p.m.) and Yale on Sunday, Oct. 17 (2 p.m.). Both games are at MIT's Jack Barry Field.
