BOSTON - The National Field Hockey Coaches Association honored a pair of Terriers on Tuesday, as senior tri-captain Colleen McClay (Mahopac, N.Y.) was named to the Dartfish/NFHCA Division I All-America Second Team and sophomore Pam Spuehler (Sudbury, Mass.) earned third-team honors. It is the first All-America selection for each player.
This marks the first time in five seasons that BU has had two players collect All-America accolades, as Robyn Kenney was a second-team selection in 2000, the same year Jane Rogers earned a third-team nod.
McClay, a two-time selection to the all-region first team, started in all of BU???s 83 games since her arrival in 2002. One of the top defenders to wear a Terrier uniform in recent history, McClay tied for second on the team in assists this season with six and she added a trio of goals, including a pair of game winners, to finish with 12 points. Her 22 career assists are the 10th most in program history. A two-time selection to the America East All-Conference First Team, McClay was named the Most Outstanding Player at this year???s conference tournament and was honored last week with a spot on the America East All-Academic Team.
Spuehler becomes the first BU sophomore to earn All-America recognition since Lori Heywood in 1989. She tallied 17 points, including a team-best seven assists, during an injury-shortened season this fall. The midfielder missed six contests early on, but finished strong, tallying at least one point in seven of the final nine games. An all-conference first-team selection and a member of the America East All-Tournament Team, Spuehler registered a career-high five points in the Terriers??? 5-3 victory over Central Michigan in their NCAA play-in game.
The Terriers finished the year ranked 17th in the nation with a 16-6 record. For the first time since 2000, BU advanced to the NCAA tournament, where it dropped a 4-3 overtime decision to Michigan.
