Men's Soccer Succumbs To National Champs
September 11, 2005 | Men's Soccer
NOTRE DAME, Ind. ??? The Boston University (1-3-0) men???s soccer team succumbed to two-time defending national champion #1 Indiana (3-0-1) by a score of 5-0 in the Terriers??? second and final game of the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament at Notre Dame???s Alumni Field on Sept. 11. Jacob Peterson netted three goals for the Hoosiers to pace the Indiana offense that boasts 11 goals in four games.
Hot off 1-0 and 4-0 shutouts of then #10 Wake Forest and #7 Southern Methodist, respectively, for the IU/Credit Union Classic title last weekend, the Hoosier defense has allowed just one goal in four games thus far this season and was able to keep BU???s offense at bay for the entire 90 minutes.
It was the third nationally ranked opponent BU has faced in its last three games as the Terriers are now scoreless in their last 270 minutes of play, the longest scoreless streak since a four-game span during the 1984 season.
Terrier junior goalkeeper Zach Riffett, who made a career-high nine saves in his first loss of the season, could not overcome the Hoosiers, who have now out shot their opponents 73-25 on the young season, including a lopsided 23-2 advantage over BU.
Peterson had completed his second career hat trick for Indiana before 60 minutes had been played, with the first goal coming at 14:39 when he took a thru-ball at the top of the box and drove it to the lower left side of the net from 10 yards out. Goal No. 2 came at 26:42 when Peterson headed Brian Plotkin???s cross from three yards. His third and final tally was at 57:04 when he beat the Terrier defensive unit at the top of the box and got past Riffett for the 3-0 lead.
Plotkin, who earned assists on Peterson???s first two goals, put the Hoosiers up by four at 62:54 when he tipped in Josh Tudela???s cross from just in front of the net. Billy Weaver closed out Indiana scoring at 83:45 after catching two of his own rebounds in a row and putting it past Riffett on the third attempt.
Chris Munroe and Chay Cain split time in goal for the Hoosiers, while Riffett played the full 90:00 for BU.
The Terriers will look to return to their winning ways at Brown on Friday (Sept. 16) at 7:00 p.m.
