HANOVER, N.H. - Boston University scored three goals in the first five minutes of play, including the first two tallies of freshman Lizzie Perreault's career, en route to a 5-0 shutout victory over Fairfield in a neutral-site field hockey contest held at Dartmouth's Scully-Fahey Field on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Sarah Hudak, freshman Holly Wiles and junior Ashley Parker also recorded goals for the Terriers, who improve to 5-3 on the year.
BU took full advantage of its short-corner opportunities, scoring on them four times. In the third minute of play, Parker collected a rebound and got the ball to Hudak, who made it a 1-0 contest with her first goal of the season. Just 39 seconds later, Perreault made it a two-goal lead off a penalty corner, recording the first goal of her young collegiate career on an assist from junior Amy Seaman.
"We talked about picking up where we left off from the UMass game [a 3-2 overtime win]," said head coach Sally Starr. "We took charge right from the start and really played as hard as we needed to."
Perreault didn't have to wait long for her second goal, as the freshman tipped in a rebound off a corner at the 4:01 mark to give the Terriers a commanding 3-0 lead before Fairfield was even able to record a shot.
Fairfield played tough over the remainder of the first half and tried to get back into the contest, but BU took its 3-0 advantage into intermission.
After halftime, BU picked up the intensity once again, controlling possession for the vast majority of the second half.
The Terriers created numerous scoring opportunites and tacked on another goal in the 51st minute off a penalty corner. Wiles scored for the fourth straight game on a play nearly identical to her game winner on Tuesday against UMass, finding the boards off a set-up from senior tri-captain Colleen McClay.
Under two minutes later, Parker turned in a great individual effort against the run of play, firing a shot to the back of the cage for BU's fifth and final goal.
The BU defense was outstanding during the second half, preventing the Stags from recording a shot during the final 31 minutes of regulation. Junior goalkeeper Erin Prediger recorded two saves for the Terriers before red-shirt freshman Patty Morrison took over for the final 11 minutes of regulation to complete the shutout.
"In the second half, we were very strong technically and tactically," said Starr. "Our defense did a great job. Erin [Prediger] was strong in goal and Colleen [McClay] made several clean tackles to keep Fairfield from getting any strong scoring opportunities."
The Stags got a nine-save performance from Lauren Callahan before Elizabeth Thomas made one save in the final 6:20.
BU will stay in Hanover and look for its third straight win when it faces Dartmouth on Sunday at 1 p.m. Last season, the Terriers posted a 4-1 home victory over the Big Green.
