
Women's Basketball Opens Season with Trip to URI Tonight

The Boston University women's basketball team opens its 2006-07 campaign with a road trip to Kingston, R.I. to take on the University of Rhode Island Rams (0-1) tonight. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. The Terriers finished with an 18-12 overall record in 2005-06, making their fourth consecutive trip to the America East finals, and will return 12 letter winners from that squad.
THE TERRIERS: Boston University tips-off the 2006-07 women’s basketball season with the University of Rhode Island (0-1) tonight at URI’s Ryan Center in Kingston, R.I. Third-year head coach Kelly Greenberg returns tri-captains Katie Meinhardt, Erica Kovach and Cheri Raffo, to lead this year’s talented crop. Juniors Kasey Devine and Corinne Jean, along with sophomores Amarachi Umez-Eronini, Christine Kinneary and Jesyka Burks-Wiley also return to BU for another season. In total, 12 letter winners return for the 2006-07 campaign. Three newcomers join the Terrier squad as Aly Hinton, Jacy Schulz and Kristen Folk will make their debut in the scarlet and white.
SCOUTING THE RAMS: The University of Rhode Island opened its season with a 69-56 loss to ACC foe Virginia. Lyndra Littles and Siedah Williams paced the Cavaliers’ offense, while Amanda McGrew, Jessica Magley and Tanja Licina each scored in double digits. Licina also brought down 10 boards for the only double-double for the Rams. Safi Mojidi is Rhode Island’s top returning forward, averaging 15.4 ppg in 2005-06.
RADIO-TV COVERAGE: The BU-URI game will be broadcast on the radio on WTBU. Jonah Goldberg and David Riggs will provide the call. The radio broadcast can be accessed on the internet at goterriers.com.
BU-URI HISTORY: The Terriers and Rams have met 11 times on the court. Rhode Island holds the series edge, 6-5, however, the two teams have not faced each other since the 1987 season when BU claimed the 73-55 victory. That season the two Northeast schools met twice with BU taking home the win on both occasions.
BU vs. ATLANTIC 10: BU is 22-25 all-time versus members of the Atlantic-10 conference. In their only game last season against an opponent from the conference, the Terriers defeated Delaware, 61-59 at Case Gym. Under Kelly Greenberg the Terriers have faced two Atlantic-10 opponents, LaSalle and St. Joseph’s, while holding a 1-1 record in those games.
This season the Terriers will face two Atlantic-10 opponents. BU is also scheduled to face Dayton on Dec. 29.
Season openers: In its 31-year program history, BU is 12-19 in season openers. When the Terriers open on the road they are 2-8, while today’s game marks the second consecutive road season opener. BU has lost its last five season openers. Last season the Terriers opened their campaign with an Atlantic-10 opponent as they fell 51-49 to St. Joseph’s. That game was the only other meeting with an Atlantic-10 opponent in a season opener.
ON THE ROAD AGAIN: The women’s basketball team will open its 2006-07 season with three consecutive away matches before returning home to Case Gym to host Canisius College on Nov. 26. Following the match-up with Canisius, the Terriers will hit the road and travel to Storrs, Conn., to take on the Connecticut Huskies on Nov. 28, before heading out West to participate in the Arizona State Tournament with ASU, Northern Arizona and Eastern Michigan on Dec. 1 and Dec. 2.
NEXT TIME OUT: This Saturday Boston University travels to Missouri for the first time in program history to face the University of Missouri – Kansas City. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. The Kangaroos currently stand at 0-1 on the season after falling to Colorado State, 89-72. The game will mark the first time BU matches-up against a Mid-Continent Conference team.
WELCOME HOME: One Terrier who will be making a trip home is Kasey Devine. Devine, a native of North Kingstown, R.I., grew up just a few miles from the URI campus in Kingston, R.I. While playing for North Kingstown High School, Devine amasses 1,617 points, 1,039 rebounds and 569 blocks. She posted 43 double-doubles and 23 triple doubles. She was a Street & Smith All-America Honorable Mention in her senior year.
MEET THE FRESHMEN: Three student-athletes join women’s basketball program, as Kristen Folk, Aly Hinton and Jacy Schulz will wear the scarlet and white this season. Folk and Hinton hail from Pennsylvania, while Hinton is an Ohio native.
Folk is a 6-4 center from Scranton Prepatory High School. She earned second-team all-state honors as a senior after helping her team earn a division title in addition to a second-place district finish. She averaged 16.0 points per game and led her team in both rebounding and blocks. Folk is a native of Moosic, Pa.
Hinton, a native of Richboro, Pa., served as a two-year captain and helped her team claim four consecutive league titles in addition to earning District 1 championships in 2003 and 2006. A 6-1 forward, Hinton led her squad to the PIAA 4A state finals this past season while earning All-Suburban first-team honors for the third consecutive season. Hinton was also selected to the All-Southeastern Pennsylvania Second Team.
At Midpark High School in Middleburg Heights, Ohio, Schulz averaged 20 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals per game during her senior year, when she set the program record for points scored in a career. In addition to being a two-time second-team All-Ohio honoree, Schulz earned a spot on this year’s Northeast Ohio First Team. Schulz led the Southwest Conference in scoring this past season to help her earn conference MVP honors.
BU ON TV: This season, all 29 of the Terriers’ regular-season games will be broadcast live on WTBU-FM Radio, Boston University’s student-run radio station. Broadcasts can be heard live on 640 AM or 89.3 FM in Boston and via the internet at WTBURadio.com. Jonah Goldberg and David Riggs will be WTBU’s broadcast team for the 2006-07 campaign.
On television, three regular-season games along with the semifinals and finals of the America East Tournament will be televised. The Terriers’ contests vs. Stony Brook on Feb. 10 and at Hartford on Feb. 21 will be broadcast on New England Sports Network. BU’s game at Connecticut on Nov. 28 will be broadcast on Connecticut Public Television. The America East semifinals and finals will be televised live by NESN.
