Field Hockey Aims for Repeat at America East Championship
November 5, 2006 | Field Hockey
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Boston University field hockey team will look to earn consecutive America East field hockey titles when it faces Maine in the championship game for the second time in as many years. The title game will take place on Sunday, Nov. 5, at 1 p.m. on Jack Barry Field. Last November, the Terriers posted a 3-1 victory over the Black Bears to claim their first conference crown since 2000.
Both teams advanced to the championship game with 1-0 victories in the semifinals on Friday, but did so in completely different fashions.
The Terriers dominated Vermont on the stat sheet but needed just one goal, which came from junior Hayley Hamada in the 19th minute. For the game, BU held a 20-4 advantage over the Catamounts in both shots and penalty corners.
In the second semifinal, Maine and Albany battled through regulation without either team scoring. After the Great Danes put four shots on goal in the early stages of overtime, the Black Bears took advantage of their first scoring opportunity in the extra session, tallying the game winner at the 79:05 mark.
BU and Maine faced off in the regular-season finale on Saturday, Oct. 28, with the Terriers posting a 3-0 shutout behind two goals from senior Amy Seaman. The Terriers lead the all-time series, 20-5.
The Terriers have claimed five America East titles (1991, 1993, 1999, 2000, 2005), while the Black Bears will be in search of their first-ever conference championship.
