
Women???s Basketball Drops 79-59 Decision to Delaware

NEWARK, Del. – Despite senior tri-captain Katie Meinhardt’s 24-point performance the Boston University women’s basketball team dropped a 79-59 decision to the University of Delaware on Sunday afternoon at the Bob Carpenter Center. The Terriers fall to 5-4 on the season, while the Fightin’ Blue Hens improve to 8-1 overall.
Meinhardt and Delaware’s Tyresa Smith led all scorers with 24 points apiece. Meinhardt’s 20+-point performance was the 11th of her career and second this season. Senior tri-captain Erica Kovach and freshman Aly Hinton scored 12 and 11 points, respectively.
In the first half, BU was paced by hot-shooting Meinhardt, whose 18-point performance on 7-of-9 shooting, including four from 3-point range, led all scorers by the end of the first stanza.
Delaware opened up the first two minutes of play, going on a 9-3 run, backed by Melissa Czorniewy’s five points, however the Terriers came back to within two on Kovach’s two free throws and a fast break lay-up by Meinhardt.
The action was fast up and down the court, and BU brought it two within one point on Meinhardt’s seventh point of the game. Meinhardt came back down the court and gave the Terrier’s their first lead since the second minute of the game with her second 3-pointer at 14:12. By the 12:45 mark, Meinhardt had already surpassed 15 points.
BU picked up its largest lead of the half on a lay-up by sophomore Christine Kinneary at 10:32, upping the score to 22-16. BU held the lead over the next four minutes, but Delaware reclaimed its lead on an 8-0 run to put the score at 32-27.
The Fightin’ Blue Hens finished out the first stanza on a 9-3 run to up their lead to 41-33.
In the second half, Delaware started on a 16-3 run to earn the 57-36 lead. Meinhardt surpassed the 21-point mark at 10:58 with her fifth 3-pointer of the game.
The Fightin’ Blue Hens broke open the contest behind Tyresa Smith’s eight second-half points and never looked back. Delaware took its largest lead with 4:40 remaining in the game when Courtney Irving hit her second free throw.
Meinhardt needs just 38 more points to hit the 1,000-point mark, as she stands at 962 career points. UD won its seventh consecutive victory and the Fightin' Blue Hens' Kyle DeHaven broke a school record with nine steals in the game.
Boston University returns to the court on Tuesday, Dec. 12, when the Terriers host cross-town foe Harvard University at 7 p.m.
