Miller Sets Career Assist Mark; Terriers Defeat Oregon, 19-8

BOSTON - Senior Mary Beth Miller became the Terriers' all-time assist leader and sophomore Jenny Hauser recorded eight points, helping the 11th-ranked Boston University women's lacrosse team post a 19-8 victory over visiting Oregon on Saturday afternoon at Nickerson Field. The triumph extended the Terriers' home win streak to 20 games and pushed their season record to 10-3.
Miller earned three assists on the day with her final one coming on a Hauser goal with 12:56 left in regulation, giving her 96 in her career to break the record of 95 held by former teammate Alyssa Trudel '05.
Hauser scored six goals on the day, while senior tri-captain Lindsay Lewis recorded six points on the strength of four goals. Sophomore Lauren Morton netted three goals, while freshman Sarah Dalton scored twice.
The Terriers broke open a 2-2 tie with seven straight goals en route to an 11-4 halftime advantage. The Ducks tried to get back in the contest, scoring the first three tallies following intermission, but BU scored eight of the afternoon's final nine goals to secure their fourth straight victory.
Oregon, which fell to 8-7 with the loss, was paced by sophomore Lindsay Killian, who recorded a hat trick. Classmate Jana Bradley scored twice and added an assist, while redshirt freshman Alison Leiner was credited with a pair of assists.
Hauser opened up the scoring on BU’s first possession, curling around a defender before finding the back of the net 41 seconds into the contest. Sophomore Molly Collins claimed the ensuing draw control and blitzed towards the cage before slipping shot past Oregon goalkeeper Anna Poponyak for her fourth goal of the season to create an early 2-0 lead for the Terriers.
Tallies by Killian and Bradley drew the Ducks even at 2 exactly four minutes into the game, but BU broke the tie just 24 seconds later, as Miller used a spin move to score her lone goal of the game.
BU regained a two-goal lead just over three minutes later, as Miller found Lewis right in front of the cage for a successful one-timer.
Hauser continued the run, dodging from right to left through the arc before scoring her second goal of the day at the 9:12 mark. Lewis and Hauser traded goals once again to create a 7-2 cushion for the Terriers with under 13 minutes to play in the half.
The seven-goal run was capped by goals from Morton and Dalton, as Morton scored on an assist from Hauser and Dalton converted a free-position try.
Oregon stopped the run with a free-position goal of its own from the stick of sophomore Theresa Waldron. Killian added another goal 33 ticks later to get the visitors within five at 9-4.
Lewis and Morton scored the final two goals of the opening half to create an 11-4 advantage for the Terriers at the break.
The Ducks controlled play in the early stages of the second half, scoring three unanswered goals in the first four minutes following intermission. However, the visitors would score only once the rest of the way.
Miller tied the record with just under 15 minutes to play when she found Dalton just outside the crease. The freshman converted a tough-angle shot, giving BU and 16-7 lead. Exactly two minutes later, Miller had the record all to herself, as Hauser collected a pass from the senior just outside the left crease before going top shelf on Poponyak.
Hauser finished off her six-goal effort with the final tally of the game, her 50th of the season.
Sophomore netminder Jenna Golden earned the win in goal, making five saves in just over 52 minutes of work. She was relieved by senior Colleen McClay, who stopped both shots she faced. Poponyak make nine saves before yielding way to Allison O’Brien, who made one stop.
BU outshot Oregon by a wide 39-17 margin and held a commanding 39-17 advantage in ground balls. The Terriers earned a season-high 21 draw controls, led by a career-best seven by Lewis. Lewis also collected a game-high five ground balls and senior tri-captain Danica Strutt led all players with four caused turnovers.
The Terriers will return to action on Wednesday, April 19, when they welcome Vermont to Nickerson Field for an America East contest beginning at 4 p.m.
