HANOVER, N.H. – The Boston University women’s lacrosse team had its season come to an end on Sunday afternoon, as the Terriers were held to just two goals in each half of a 9-4 loss to seventh-seeded Dartmouth at Scully-Fahey Field. Sophomores Jenny Hauser and Lauren Morton scored two goals apiece and classmate Jenna Golden made 10 stops in goal. BU finishes the year with a 15-5 record.
BU scored the first two goals of the game, but ran into an offensive drought of over 24 minutes and never recovered. The Big Green scored the final six goals of the first half to take a lead it never relinquished.
Playing in what was the final game of her career, senior Lindsay Lewis was held without a goal for the first time since a home contest against Hofstra on March 16, 2005, ending a streak of 36 straight games. The nine members of the senior class wrapped up a stellar four years, as they combined to record 438 goals, 198 assists, 720 ground balls, 487 draw controls and 332 caused turnovers during their time at BU.
Dartmouth, which improved to 12-5 on the year, was paced by a hat-trick effort from senior Annie Leibovitz while junior Whitney Douthett recorded two goals and two assists. Senior netminder Devon Wills made seven saves, helping the Big Green advance to the quarterfinal round versus Princeton, an 8-7 upset winner over second-seeded Virginia.
The Big Green held a 23-19 advantage in shots and collected 31 ground balls to BU’s 25. Dartmouth controlled eight of the day’s 14 draws.
After stellar defensive play on both ends early on, Hauser gave the Terriers a 1-0 lead on a free-position tally in the sixth minute. Dartmouth claimed the ensuing draw and a great hustle play by Kaitlyn Cuneo on a wide Big Green shot allowed BU to regain possession, leading to another free-position goal for Hauser.
Golden was terrific in goal for the first 13 minutes of play, stopping the first four shots on goal she faced, including a point-blank attempt on a Dartmouth fast break.
The Big Green broke out of its early offensive slump in a big way, reeling off three straight goals in a span of 1:51 to take a 3-2 advantage with just over 15 minutes left in the opening half. Dartmouth tacked on two more goals, both coming in the 23rd minute, to make it a 5-2 affair.
While the Terriers continued to struggle on the offensive end, the Big Green held onto the ball for the final three minutes of the half, waiting for the final shot. A shooting-space foul with 1.7 seconds left on the clock allowed junior Jen Pittman to cap the 6-0 run and send the home squad into the half with all the momentum at 6-2.
Morton ignited the BU sidelines by ending a 24:27 scoreless drought with the first goal of the second half on a free-position try. However, Dartmouth regained the four-goal edge with an 8-meter marker of its own before senior Kristen Zimmer assisted on a Douthett tally to create a five-goal cushion at 8-3.
The Terriers looked to muster a late rally when Morton beat Wills on a great individual effort with 9:20 to play to cut the deficit to 8-4. However, costly turnovers prevented BU from getting on the board for the rest of the game. Douthett took advantage of an empty net with just under two minutes to play to create the 9-4 final.
