ALLSTON, Mass. - The 14th-ranked Boston University field hockey team picked up its 14th win of the season on Wednesday evening, posting a 2-0 shutout against Harvard at Jordan Field. Senior Hayley Hamada and junior Holly Wiles scored for the Terriers, who now stand at 14-5 on the year heading into the regular-season finale against Vermont on Saturday.
"We did what we needed to do to get a win against a very good team who's having an excellent year," said head coach Sally Starr. "Playing at Harvard has always been difficult for us and to come home with a two-goal victory - you've got to be happy with that."
Hamada opened the scoring with a goal in the fourth minute. The forward initially missed a cross on the left side of the circle before taking the ball away from a Harvard defender and knocking it through the legs of Crimson netminder Siobhan Connolly.
The Terriers used a perfectly executed corner to take a two-goal lead before intermission. Wiles blasted home a shot from the top of the circle with 12:21 left in the opening half on assists from seniors Sarah Hudak and Pam Spuehler.
Freshman goalkeeper Kim Kastuk and the Terrier defense would do the rest, as the netminder stopped both of the shots on goal she faced to pick up her fifth shutout of the season.
The Terriers outshot the Crimson, 10-4, and held a 4-1 lead in penalty corners.
"Defensively, I think we did a good job to limit them to one corner," added Starr. "At times, we put some excellent attack going into the circle, but we struggled to create and finish once we got in there. We were effective, however, going through the midfield."
BU will look to finish off a perfect conference season and claim the league's regular-season title outright when it welcomes Vermont to Jack Barry Field on Saturday. Game time is set for 1 p.m. The Terriers will honor their eight-member senior class prior to the game.
