On Sept. 29, the Boston University lacrosse program welcomed back some of the great Terriers of the past with its annual Alumnae Game at Nickerson Field. A record turnout of 27 alums challenged the 2008 squad, with the Old Dogs giving the current Terriers a good test.
Among the alums returning to "The Nick" were BU's all-time scoring leader, Chrissy Lombard `01, BU's leader in career goals, Lindsey Lewis `06, BU's career and season record holder in assists, Mary Beth Miller `06, and BU's all-time leader in ground balls, Kristin Abruzzese-Palen `02. In addition, two former All-American goalkeepers, Brooke Barrett `02 and Anne Sheridan '05 (and current BU assistant coach), saw action in the game. One of the highlights of the game was watching Caroline Doherty `99, a member of the historic 1996 squad which returned BU Lacrosse to Divisin I varsity status, return to the defensive zone for the alums.
But in the end, it was the current Terriers who came out on top. After just two weeks of practice the team showed some signs of solid defense, aggressive attacking and strong midfield transitioning. Sophomore McKinley Curro led the Terriers in scoring, while junior Sarah Dalton and seniors Molly Collins and Lauren Morton added to the offensive production. In the backfield, senior Jenna Golden and sophomore Rachel Klein split time in the cage and made multiple stops against the alumnae. The new crop of Terriers from the class of 2011 played quality minutes against the alumni with standout performances coming from freshman midfielder Mandy Rogers (Nashua, NH) and freshman defender Katie Nichols (Medford, NJ)
Later that evening, the team hosted the 2007 Season Banquet celebrating the accomplishments of the previous year. With parents, alumni and friends in attendance, head coach Liz Robertshaw presented every member of the team with their team plaques commemorating last year's winning season, America East Regular & Tournament Championships and repeat trip to the NCAA Tournament. Last year marked the third straight AE championship and NCAA tournament appearance, a program first.
Junior Molly Collins received the team's Most Valuable Player honor, while freshmen McKinley Curro and Jenny Taft were named the Most Improved Players. Junior Lauren Morton was honored for scoring her 100th goal of her career last season and sophomore Sarah Dalton was honored for becoming the new BU Record Holder for "Draw Controls in a Season" with her performance of 56 last spring. The night concluded with a heartfelt thank you and well wishes to the Class of 2007; Nicole Cooper, Kait Gentry, Noelle Hopper, Angie Martin and Alex Mount.
