BOSTON - Headlined by a school-record-tying four first-team selections, five members of the Boston University field hockey team were named to the Longstreth/NFHCA Northeast All-Region teams, as announced on Wednesday by the National Field Hockey Coaches' Association. Seniors Sarah Hudak, Sarah Shute and Pam Spuehler, along with sophomore Suus Dekker, were all named to the region's top squad, while senior Laura Dean was a second-team honoree.
Shute and Spuehler became the fourth and fifth players in school history to be named to the first team in three straight seasons. Dekker was a first-team pick for the second consecutive year, while Hudak and Dean earned all-region honors for the first time in their careers.
The five were instrumental in the Terriers' winningest season in program history, as the squad posted an 18-6 record and advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals for the first time in 16 years.
Spuehler tallied a team- and conference-best 37 points from the midfield this fall, recording 11 goals and 15 assists. She ranked eighth in the country in assists per game.
The team's leader in goals with 15, Shute added four assists to finish the year with 34 points. Her 45 career goals ranks third all-time at BU.
Shute and Spuehler wrap up their careers fourth and sixth on the school's all-time scoring list with 107 and 85 points, respectively.
Dekker completed another strong year in the BU midfield with 15 points on five goals and five assists. No goal was bigger then her double-overtime tally in the Terriers' 1-0 victory over No. 5 Iowa in the NCAA first Round.
Hudak, who was named the America East Defensive Player of the Year, and Dean were key components of a defense that ranked 11th in the country in goals allowed per game (1.19).
The Terriers also placed four on the first team during the 1996, 1995 and 1985 campaigns.
