Despite four players in double-figures, the Boston University women's basketball team dropped an 83-68 decision to No. 16 Ohio State on Saturday afternoon at Agganis Arena. Senior Cheri Raffo posted a career-high 23 points, while junior Jesyka Burks-Wiley, senior Kasey Devine and junior Amarachi Umez-Eronini tallied 16, 11 and 10 points, respectively. The Terriers drop to 2-1 overall, while the Buckeyes improve to 3-0 on the season.
The Terriers kept it close and came within one point, 61-60, with under eight minutes remaining, however, the Buckeyes went on a 22-8 run to close out the game and earn the 15-point victory.
BU shot 42.9 percent for the game and were 7-for-14 from the arc. For the third consecutive contest, the Terriers were solid at the free-throw line going 13-for-15 from the charity stripe.
In the first half, BU played a tough defensive game, capped off by six steals and 13 forced turnovers. Senior Cheri Raffo led all BU scorers with nine points, including 3-for-4 shooting from the arc. Raffo brought the Terriers to within three points on two separate occasions after Ohio State went up by as much as nine points mid-way through the half. Junior Amarachi Umez-Eronini also had a strong half, drawing three charges and dishing out four assists.
In the first stanza, BU shot 46.4 percent from the field and was 4-for-4 from the field.
In the second half, BU kept it close with strong defense from Umez-Eronini and hot shooting from Raffo, who was two points off a career high with 10 minutes to play. BU brought it to within one with a made free throw by Umez-Eronini - the closest the Terriers had been since the first half.
However, with less than six minutes to go, the Buckeyes began their final run that upped their lead to 12 points an advantage that proved insurmountable. BU made a valiant press to the end, as Raffo hit the career high on two free throws.
The Terriers will now turn their focus to Northeastern on Monday, Nov. 19 at 5:30 p.m. at Case Gym.
