BOSTON - Headlined by senior Pam Spuehler's inclusion on the first team, the Boston University field hockey team matched a program high as three of its players were named Longstreth/NFHCA All-Americans by the National Field Hockey Coaches' Association on Monday. Sophomore Suus Dekker earned a spot on the second team while senior Sarah Hudak was a third-team selection. Spuehler becomes the first three-time All-American in Terrier history.
It marks just the third time in school history (1995, 1996) that the Terriers have had three representatives on the All-America squads. Spuehler is just the sixth BU player to be named to the first team and the first since Jessica Alcora in 1999.
Spuehler completed a progression that included her earning third-team honors as a sophomore and second-team accolades last year as a junior. She tallied a team- and conference-best 37 points from the midfield this fall, recording 11 goals and 15 assists. She ranked eighth in the country in assists per game.
Spuehler finishes her career ranked sixth on the school's all-time scoring list with 85 points (28g, 29a).
Dekker is just the second BU sophomore to be chosen to the All-America Second Team (Alison Caito, 1985). The Holland native completed another strong year in the BU midfield with 15 points on five goals and five assists. No goal was bigger then her double-overtime tally in the Terriers' 1-0 victory over No. 5 Iowa in the NCAA first Round.
Hudak closed out her career with a remarkable senior season, as she was named the America East Defensive Player of the Year and was a key component of a defense that ranked 11th in the country in goals allowed per game (1.19).
Spuehler and Hudak served as two of the team's tri-captains this year, guiding the team to a program-record 18 wins and its first appearance in the NCAA quarterfinals since 1991.
