BOSTON - Senior midfielders Molly Collins and Lauren Morton have been named co-captains of the 2008 Boston University lacrosse team, as announced by head coach Liz Robertshaw on Tuesday. Morton will be serving as a captain for the second consecutive season, while Collins will enter her first year in the role.
Both Morton and Collins were named to the IWLCA Northeast All-Region Second Team last season after helping the Terriers post a 13-6 record and win their third straight America East title.
Collins, who tied Morton for the team lead in caused turnovers last year with 30, also ranked second on the squad in ground balls (37). She added 34 points - including 28 goals - to go along with 43 draw controls. After playing an instrumental role in the Terriers' league title run, she was named the America East Championship's Most Outstanding Player.
"I am thrilled to name Molly a captain this year. She epitomizes hard work, dedication and true passion for this game and this team," said Robertshaw. "With a younger squad, Molly's motto of "leading by example" is essential to the growth of our team. I am confident that she is ready for this position and know that she will push each member of the program to their best as individuals and as a team."
One of only 11 Terriers to eclipse the 100-goal mark in a career, Morton enters her senior campaign with 103 goals to her credit. She finished second on last year's team with 41 tallies and added six assists for 47 points. Morton also recorded 30 caused turnovers and 28 ground balls. She added 50 draw controls and needs just eight more to break the program's career record of 142.
"Lauren's election to captain for the second consecutive year is a credit to the job she did for us as a junior captain," said Robertshaw. "She has been an influential and emotional leader for this team who exemplifies all of the traits we look for in a Terrier Lacrosse player. I am proud of the way she carries herself on and off of the field and I am confident she will lead us to another great year."
The two standouts, who were both named to last year's America East All-Tournament Team, will look to help BU become the first school in conference history to capture four consecutive league titles.
"The two - Lauren, a more vocal leader, and Molly, a true lead by example player - are a great compliment to each other in their roles as captains," added Robertshaw. "I am excited to see how they continue to shape this team and leave their legacy in the months to come."
