NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Sophomore guard Corey Lowe (Newton, Mass.) led all scorers with a career-best 35 points as the Boston University men's basketball team (3-6) recorded a 76-67 win over Yale (3-6) Tuesday evening in the John J. Lee Amphitheater. Lowe shot 13-for-20 from the floor, including 7-for-13 from the 3-point line.
Classmate Carlos Strong (Portland, Maine) added 16 points and was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Junior guard Marques Johnson (Hazlet, N.J.) continued to shine at the point, with five points and four assists with no turnovers. In the last two games, Johnson has posted 11 assists with no errors.
The Bulldogs went ahead 5-0 early in the first half, but the Terriers went on a 17-4 run, keyed by the first of Lowe's seven threes, to take the lead for good. BU started a small lineup and ran essentially a four-guard offense. The Terriers' 3/4-court defense pushed the tempo to a pace the Bulldogs were unprepared for as BU forced 10 first-half Yale turnovers and 21 for the game, earning 24 points off those miscues.
The Terriers ran out to a 27-14 lead after two Yale turnovers led to a Scott Brittain (Oakville, Ont.) lay up and a Strong three at 6:33 in the first. During that span Lowe went on a personal 9-0 run, hitting three straight treys.
BU went into the locker room up 38-26 after shooting 61.5 percent (8-for-13) from deep.
Yale came out strong in the second half and cut the lead to eight, 38-30, at 17:47. However, Lowe and Strong combined to score BU's first 14 points as the Terriers continued to force Yale turnovers and maintain their double-digit lead. The closest Yale was able to get was nine the rest of the way.
BU earned its first win in the series, a rivalry that had lain dormant for 71 years. BU also claims its second-straight win over an Ivy opponent after handing Harvard a 79-72 loss last Tuesday.
Boston University takes a break for finals before traveling to Delaware on Dec. 22 to play the Blue Hens at 7 p.m.
