
Women's Basketball Falls to Kansas, 71-57

LAWRENCE, Kan. - Junior Jesyka Burks-Wiley posted 20 points for the second-consecutive game, however, the Boston University women's basketball team dropped a 71-57 decision to Kansas on Sunday, Dec. 30. The Terriers fall to 7-6 overall, while the Jayhawks improve to 10-2 on the season.
Playing just 30 minutes from her hometown of Kansas City, Mo., Burks-Wiley posted her 10th double-figure scoring game and fourth consecutive on 9-for-17 shooting from the field. The junior forward was 2-for-3 from three-point range and brought down nine boards.
Senior Corinne Jean was 5-for-10 from the field and knocked down two three-pointers to post 12 points, while junior Christine Kinneary dished out seven assists. Senior Kasey Devine swatted five shots and junior Amarachi Umez-Eronini earned four steals.
In a game that saw four lead changes, BU collected 30 rebounds - 21 defensive - and shot 43.9 percent from the field. The Terriers put up 22 points off turnovers and 23 points came from the BU bench.
The Terriers and Jayhawks played a fast-paced game to get things started, matching basket for basket on either end. Jean knotted the score at six at 16:06 on a jumper just inside the arc. She then gave the Terriers an 11-6 advantage on a trey at 14:48. Kansas came roaring back to tie the score at 12 and then reclaimed the lead on a three-pointer at 10:47.
Sophomore Kristen Folk came off the bench to post four points in less than a minute to bring BU back to 18-18. The Jayhawks used a 12-0 run to increase their lead to 30-18 with 5:06 remaining in the first stanza, but sophomore Aly Hinton ended the run with a trey at 3:59, which also ended a six-minute scoring drought for the Terriers. On the next possession, Hinton dished it off to Devine in the paint to cut the deficit to seven.
To close out the half, Kansas' Danielle McCray netted four the squad's last six points to up its lead to 11 and take a 36-25 advantage into the break. BU shot 37 percent in the first half and pulled down 18 boards.
Burks-Wiley came up with the hot hand in the second half, posting the Terriers' first 10 points and put the deficit to five, 40-35. Devine made it a one-possession game at 16:08 with a layup, and she then took over on offense bringing BU to within one, 42-41, on six consecutive points. Burks-Wiley reclaimed the Terriers' lead on a jumper in the paint at 12:38, and then put the squad up by three at 11:12, 45-42.
The lead was short-lived, however, as the Jayhawks took back the advantage by one point, 48-47. Kansas went on a 6-0 run that put it up by seven, 55-48, with 5:51 remaining in regulation.
Kansas again increased its lead to 10, 63-53, following back-to-back treys. The Jayhawks outscored the Terriers 9-4 to close the game, 71-57.
BU returns home for first time in over a month when it hosts Hartford on Jan. 5 at 1:00 p.m. in the conference opener.
