PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Boston University lacrosse team came up short on Sunday afternoon in the first round of the NCAA tournament, dropping an 11-5 decision to fourth-seeded Penn at Rhodes Field. The Terriers had their nine-game win streak snapped and finish the year with a record of 13-6.
Junior Lauren Morton, who grew up just under 15 miles from Philadelphia, scored a team-high two goals while playing in front of a large group of friends and family. Senior Angie Martin and freshman McKinley Curro each tallied a goal and an assist, while junior Molly Collins scored once and collected a game-high four draw controls. Senior Noelle Hopper had team highs in both ground balls (3) and caused turnovers (3).
Penn, which won its 12th straight game, improved to 15-1 on the year and will play host to fifth-seeded Maryland, a 13-7 winner over Yale, in next Saturday’s quarterfinal round.
The Quakers were paced by junior Rachel Manson, who tallied three goals, including the 100th point of her career. Senior Chrissy Muller registered two goals and two assists for a game-best four points.
Junior Sarah Waxman made seven saves for Penn, while junior Jenna Golden recorded four stops in goal for BU. The Terriers were 0-for-7 on free-position shots on the day.
Morton gave the Terriers a 1-0 lead just over five minutes into the game on an assist from Martin, but Penn responded with a 5-1 run and held the visitors scoreless for over 19 minutes.
The Quakers ran down the clock at the end of the half, looking for the last shot before the break, but turned the ball over with 18 seconds left on an illegal screen. The Terriers took full advantage of the opportunity, racing down the field in time for Curro to fire a shot past Waxman with just two seconds left to make it a 5-3 contest at halftime.
Penn scored three of the first four goals in the second half before a goal by Martin made the score 8-5 in the Quakers' favor with 15:18 left in regulation. The Terreirs would get no closer, however, as Penn scored the game's final three goals to create the 11-5 final.
BU oustshot Penn, 23-21, and held a 9-8 advantage in draw controls, while the Quakers collected 15 ground balls to the Terriers’ 11.
Martin and Hopper, along with classmates Kait Gentry, Alex Mount and undergraduate assistant coach Nicole Cooper, finish their career with 55 victories as a class, one shy of the school record of 56 set by last year's seniors.
