BOSTON - The Boston University women’s lacrosse team and head coach Liz Robertshaw are excited to announce that nine newcomers will join the Terriers as members of the Class of 2011. The three-time defending America East champions will add student-athletes from seven different states to their 2008 roster.
"I am thrilled with this year’s recruiting class and with what I see them bringing to BU lacrosse both individually and collectively," said Robertshaw. "Each one of them knows the past successes of Terrier lacrosse and is excited about having a chance to shape our future here at BU."
Kate Cipolletti, one of three Massachusetts natives who will join the Terriers next year, is a three-sport star from Duxbury High School. A team captain, Cipolletti has been a three-year starter and was named a league all-star in 2006. She also plays for Team Revolution with future BU teammate Molly Swain. In addition to lacrosse, Cipolletti also lettered in soccer and indoor track, qualifying for the state meet in the 55-meters this past winter.
"Kate is a feisty and aggressive midfield defender who brings a great presence every time she steps on the field and we couldn’t be more excited to have her as a member of our family," said Robertshaw.
Rachel Collins, sister of current BU junior Molly Collins, joins the Terrier program after finishing her career this spring at Winchester High School. A three-year varsity starter in soccer and lacrosse, Collins was named a Middlesex League Lacrosse All-Star in 2006 and was a member of the Lower New England Team 2 for the National Tournament. Collins was also a two-year varsity starter on the basketball team.
"Rachel’s decision to attend BU and play along side Molly was awesome," said Robertshaw. "Rachel, like her older sister, brings a no-nonsense style of play on the field and a fun spirit off of it. I think she will be a great addition."
A standout midfielder from Centennial High School in Ellicott City, Md., Corcoran Downey was named to the All-Howard County Second Team last season before earning a spot on the Baltimore All-Star team for the 2006 Under Armour All-America Lacrosse Classic Underclassmen game. She was a three-year starter for Centennial and played for the Hero’s club team, a squad that once featured Angie and Jenny Martin, along with Noelle Hopper.
"Corcoran has great game sense and risk-taking abilities in the midfield," said Robertshaw. "I am excited for her to bring that style of play to an already solid Terrier midfield."
A four-year varsity soccer and lacrosse player at Strath Haven High School, Alyssa Kovach is the leading goal-scorer in Delaware County and the Central League. Receiving All-Deco Honorable Mention Honors in soccer and lacrosse in 2005, Kovach was the leading point scorer last season while being honored as first-team All-Deco and All-Central League. Serving as a two-year team captain, Kovach was also named an Academic All-American, and as a two-year member of the top Upper Atlantic Team, she led the squad to the US Lacrosse National Tournament finals.
"Alyssa has a natural eye to the cage attack-wise and is a force in the midfield on the draw," said Robertshaw. "I am excited to bring another strong midfield attacker to our dynamic Terrier system."
Katie Nichols, a defender from Shawnee High School in New Jersey, is a two-time first-team All-Conference selection and a member of the first team for the Upper Atlantic Region in the 2006 US Lacrosse National Tournament. A captain for the lacrosse and soccer teams at Shawnee, Nichols also earned second-team All-South Jersey honors in 2006 and second-team All-Conference accolades for soccer.
"Katie is a great proven defender," said Robertshaw. "She’s a strong 1v1 player and very vocal — two components we look for to compliment our defensive system here at BU."
Mandy Rogers is a three-sport standout at Nashua South High School in New Hampshire and was named to the Nashua Telegraph First Team in addition to earning second-team All-State honors. A member of Granite State Elite and the top Upper New England team, Rogers was selected as a recipient of the 2007 NHADA/NHIAA High School Female Athletic/Academic Award. Rogers was also named 2006 Field Hockey Offensive Player of the Year and was a Nashua Telegraph Honorable Mention for both field Hockey and basketball.
"Having Mandy join the team from right up the road in New Hampshire is an exciting prospect," said Robertshaw. "She brings a wealth of potential matched with speed and hard-nosed midfield play."
Molly Swain, who played with Cipolletti for Team Revolution, was a two-sport standout at Beaver Country Day School in Cambridge and a four-year starter on the lacrosse team. An attacker, Swain was a three-time Eastern Independent League All-Star, a New England Prep School All-Star and Beaver Country Day’s Most Valuable Player in 2006. As captain of the field hockey team, Swain was a two-time Eastern Independent All-Star and a two-time MVP.
"Molly has great size and presence on the field in the attacking end and I look forward to another strong player to compliment our Terrier attack," said Robertshaw.
Kristen Tallon, a two-sport standout in field hockey and lacrosse for Lake Forest High School, was named All-State for lacrosse in 2006 and was chosen to the Great Lakes National team. She also helped her field hockey team claim three consecutive Illinois state championships. A three-year varsity starter for the lacrosse team, Tallon was a member of the Wildcat Elite Club team for the past three years.
"Kristen is a great addition to the program," said Robertshaw. "She is a solid attacker who I think will do well in our BU attacking system. I am excited to have our first Chicago player on the team because I think it shows the growth of our sport and Terrier Nation."
Catie Tilton, a four-year letter winner in field hockey and lacrosse, heads to the east coast from Cherry Creek High School in Colorado. A first-team All-State and All-League selection in both sports, Tilton led her lacrosse team in scoring in each of the past two seasons and was a member of the Rocky Mountain National team. Serving as captain of her field hockey team, Tilton was named her team’s MVP in addition to earning Defensive Player of the Year honors.
"Catie exemplifies heart and hustle," said Robertshaw. "She has the ability to do what is needed to make a team successful, from causing a turnover in the midfield to scoring a game-winning goal — things we look for in a Terrier."
