BOSTON - The Boston University women's soccer team fought back from a one-goal deficit to earn a 1-1 draw with Big Ten opponent Minnesota on Friday evening at Nickerson Field. Sophomore Farrell McClernon netted the game-tying goal in the 72nd minute. The tie moves the Terriers to 3-4-1 on the season, while the Golden Gophers now stand at 3-3-1.
BU found itself in an early deficit when the Golden Gophers struck on a corner kick 10 minutes into the match. Katie Bethke stepped up for the corner kick and sent a long ball into the six-yard box that found the feet of Kelsey Hood, who deflected it to Lindsey Schwartz. Schwartz then slotted the ball into the far right corner of the net.
However, McClernon would knot the score at one at 71:05 on a feed from red-shirt freshman Shauna Kelleher (Canton, Mass.). Kelleher sent it into the box, where McClernon collected the pass and on a side volley sent it into the back of the net. It was McClernon's second goal of the season, and Kelleher's first collegiate point.
In the first half, the Terriers began to mount some offensive pressure after Minnesota took the lead as freshman Lina Cords (Leonardtown, Md.), sophomore Emily Pallotta (Andover, Mass.) and junior Lauren Basham (Lake Oswego, Ore.) each forced Gopher goalie Chelsey Turner to make saves.
Towards the last third of the first stanza BU began to press and created some offensive momentum going into the second half.
In the first ten minutes of the second half the Terriers carried that momentum over and began to attack the Gopher's defensive end with more urgency. Sophomore Marisha Schumacher-Hodge (Pittsburgh, Pa.) put a shot just high of the net that arched over cross bar.
McClernon's goal ignited the Terrier offense as they began to pressure the Gopher defense. Pallotta hit the cross bar on the next shot attempt, however the Minnesota defense cleared it out of harm's way.
McClernon nearly put away the game with one minute remaining when the sophomore forward got inside the defense and put a strike on goal but she collided with a Minnesota defender and Turner came out to make the diving stop sending the game into overtime.
The Terriers' best chance in overtime was on a low, hard shot off the foot of sophomore Mara Osher (Rockville, Md.), but Turner came up with the game-saving stop.
Red-shirt freshman Janie Reilly (Coral Springs, Fla.) made six saves in 110:00 minutes.
BU travels to Yale on Sept. 25 for a 7:00 p.m. contest.
