
Berry Leads Terriers Past No. 6 UConn, 2-0

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Behind a pair of early goals from senior Sheena Berry, the Boston University field hockey team posted a 2-0 upset victory over No. 6 Connecticut on Wednesday afternoon at Jack Barry Field. Sophomore Kim Kastuk made five saves to earn the shutout for the Terriers, who even their record at 8-8. The Huskies lost for just the second time all season and move to 13-2.
The win ended the Huskies' seven-game win streak in the series between the New England rivals and it marked the first time UConn had been shut out in over two years (Sept. 3, 2006).
Berry scored in the eighth and 14th minutes for her third and fourth goals of the season.
The first came off a restart on the right side by junior Gabby Hajjar, who sent the ball just outside the circle, where freshman Kiley Allosso redirected it to Berry. From the top of the circle, Berry ripped a shot inside the right post at 7:24. Allosso earned her first collegiate point with the assist.
The Terriers doubled their lead on a corner less than six minutes later. Following an insert from Hajjar and a stick-stop by junior Haley Robinson, Berry once again converted from the top of the circle at 13:05.
Berry nearly turned in a natural hat trick, but her effort in the 16th minute was stopped by UConn netminder Allison Karpiak. With UConn threatening later in the opening half, senior Lizzie Perreault came through with her first of two defensive saves on the afternoon to help the Terriers take their two-goal lead into the break.
The Terriers held a 5-3 advantage in shots in the first half before withstanding UConn's offensive pressure throughout the second half. After halftime, UConn recorded 11 shots and earned nine penalty corners.
Kastuk made five saves to earn her fifth shutout of the year. Karpiak recorded two saves for the Huskies.
BU will return to action on Saturday (Oct. 25) when it visits Albany in a battle for first place in the America East standings. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
