CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Boston University field hockey team closed out its non-conference schedule with a 2-0 victory over Harvard on Wednesday afternoon at Jack Barry Field. Junior Gabby Hajjar tallied a goal and an assist and senior Hayly Ross, who was honored with her classmates prior to their final home game, opened the scoring with the game-winner. The Terriers moved to an even 9-9 on the year, while the Crimson dropped to 6-9.
BU scored both of its goals in the first half and sophomore goalkeeper Kim Kastuk stopped all five shots she faced. Classmate Amanda Smith played the final 4:35 in the Terrier cage to complete the Terriers' sixth shutout of the season.
Harvard nearly struck first in the sixth minute of play, but Kastuk came up with a point-blank save and a shot off the ensuing rebound was stopped by Hajjar for a defensive save.
Ross opened the scoring on a restart at 11:37, as Hajjar sent the ball into the circle from the right side before Ross angled it in outside the near post.
Hajjar doubled the Terriers' lead with 3:39 left in the opening half. Sophomore Maryette Stuart sent a shot in from the right side that was saved by Harvard goalkeeper Kylie Stone. Stuart collected her own rebound and slid the ball over to the front of the cage, where Hajjar was positioned for an easy tap-in.
Neither team was able to come up with quality offensive chances in the second half, as the Terriers went on to claim their sixth non-conference victory of the season.
BU outshot Harvard, 10-8, but the Crimson held a 7-1 advantage in corners. Stone made three saves in goal for the visitors.
Ross and classmates Lizzie Perreault and Holly Wiles were honored in a pre-game ceremony for Senior Day. The class has helped the Terriers claim each of the last three America East titles and has amassed an impressive total of 57 wins over the past four seasons.
The Terriers will return to action on Saturday (Nov. 1) when they travel north to take on conference rival Vermont. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
