The Boston University field hockey team (9-9, 2-2 America East) will look to secure its fifth straight 10-win season when it heads north for its regular-season finale against Vermont (9-8, 1-3 AE) on Saturday (Nov. 1) at 1 p.m. The Terriers will need to defeat the Catamounts to qualify for next weekend's America East Championship.
BU is coming off a 2-0 shutout victory over Harvard on Wednesday, as senior Hayly Ross scored the game-winner in her final contest at Jack Barry Field and junior Gabby Hajjar registered a goal and an assist.
Vermont will be closing out a three-game homestand that began with a 3-0 win over Hofstra and included a 2-1 conference loss in the Catamounts' most recent contest on Sunday. The Catamounts have also earned wins over Longwood, Ohio State, Monmouth, Dartmouth, William & Mary, Albany, Brown and Providence this fall.
Junior Megan Maynard leads the Catamounts in points (19) and goals (9), while senior Maegan Luce is close behind with 16 points on five goals and a team-high six assists. Junior Kristen Heavens has started 15 games in goal for Vermont and has a 1.99 goals against average and a .722 save percentage.
For the Terriers, junior Nikki Lloyd has a team-best 13 points on the strength of six goals, while senior Sheena Berry (4g, 3a) and Hajjar (3g, 5a) each have recorded 11 points. The BU defense, which has posted a league-best six shutouts this season, is backed by sophomore goalkeeper Kim Kastuk, who boasts a 1.60 goals against average.
The Terriers hold a commanding 26-3-1 advantage in their all-time series with the Catamounts, including a 2-0 home victory last season.
In another America East match-up on Saturday, Fairfield visits Maine for an 11:30 p.m. start. If Maine wins, the winner of the BU/Vermont game will claim the fourth and final spot in the America East Championship. If Fairfield comes out on top, the Terriers will still need to defeat the Catamounts to qualify for the four-team tournament because of their loss to Maine earlier this season.
