Women's Basketball Claims 82-75 Victory Over Binghamton

BOSTON - Sparked by a career-high 23 points from junior Christine Kinneary, the Boston University women's basketball team earned an 82-75 victory over Binghamton on Wednesday evening at Case Gym. Sophomore Aly Hinton poured in 17 points, while juniors Jesyka Burks-Wiley and Amarachi Umez-Eronini chipped in 15 and 14, respectively, as the Terriers improve to 13-10 overall and 6-4 in the America East. The Bearcats fall to 7-15 overall and 5-4 in the conference.

Kinneary was 9-for-12 from the floor, while dishing out five assists and earning three steals in 40 minutes of action to earn America East's Player of the Game honors. Hinton was the team's leading rebounder with six boards.

The Terriers overcame an 11-point first-half deficit, as they shot 50.9 percent (29-for-57) for the game and 95 percent (19-for-20) from the charity stripe. BU was able to penetrate the Binghamton defense, scoring 32 points in the paint, while holding the Bearcats to 14. The Terriers also made the most of 20 Binghamton miscues, posting 34 points off turnovers.

In the first half, BU was down by as many as 11 points on three separate occasions, however, Kinneary ignited the comeback at 7:44 when her fast break layup reduced the deficit to seven points and drew a foul. The junior point guard converted on the three-point play to bring the score to 25-19. Following the play, BU remained within single digits of the Bearcats and senior Corinne Jean nailed the team's first trey of the game at 1:44 to draw to within two. On the next possession, Burks-Wiley knotted the score at 32. Kinneary caused a Binghamton turnover with 24 seconds remaining in the first half and went in for the layup to give BU its first lead of the game,37-35, going into halftime.

At the end of the first stanza, Kinneary led all scorers with 15 points to go along with three assists, no turnovers and two steals.

In the second half, the Terriers picked up where they left off at the break as they increased their lead to seven, 47-40, at 17:43 on two made free throws from senior Kasey Devine. Two minutes later, Kinneary converted on another three-point play to bring the score to 56-45, and force Binghamton into a timeout.

The Bearcats made one last push with under five minutes to go, coming as close as two points with 2:38 to go on two free throws, however, Burks-Wiley, senior Cheri Raffo and Umez-Eronini provided clutch shooting to give BU the 82-75 victory.

The Terriers will host Maine on Tuesday, Feb. 19 at 7:00 p.m.
