Terriers Prepare for Albany on Sunday
October 10, 2009 | Women's Soccer
BOSTON - On Sunday, the Boston University women's soccer team (8-4-2, 4-0-0 AE) will take its six-game winning streak and head to Albany (6-6-1, 1-1-1 AE) for a 2 p.m. kick-off. The Terriers, whose offense has scored 15 goals in the last six games, have yet to lose to the Great Danes in the eight-year history of the series.
Last year, Shauna Kelleher netted her first collegiate goal and added an assist as the BU won its 2008 conference opener against the Great Danes, 2-0. In that game, BU outshot Albany, 25-7, and forced UA's Amber Maisonet to make 10 saves in net. Janie Reilly collected five saves and Annie Tooley made her collegiate debut in the second half and made one stop.
Over the last six games, BU has hit its stride, going on its longest winning streak of the season and upping its offensive power. Since a 1-0 win over Harvard on Sept. 20, BU has found the back of the net an impressive 15 times with senior Emily Pallotta leading the way with four goals during that span. Four of the six wins have come over America East foes and the Terriers have now remained unbeaten in 20 consecutive games over league opponents - a streak that dates back to Oct. 21, 2007.
Two seniors have seen their names move up in the record books as Farrell McClernon now has 42 career points, which places her 10th all-time in program history for scoring, while Pallotta has moved up to 13th with 37 career points.
While BU's offense has picked up, the defense has remained just as sturdy, as it currently leads the conference in goals-against average (0.76) and shutouts (7). Reilly's 0.57 GAA remains at the top of the conference and is the 31st-best in the nation.
The Great Danes, who have taken more shots than any other America East squad with an average of 16.58 per game, are led by Chelsea DeVerna with 13 points on five goals - two game winners - and three assists. DeVerna is second in the league in points and goals. In net, Breanna Maggio and Cate Crenson have shared time in net and Maggio is currently second only to Reilly in goals-against average with a 0.89 GAA and save percentage (.860).
Following Sunday's game, BU will turn its focus to Stony Brook on Thursday (Oct. 15), Kick off is set for 7 p.m. in Stony Brook, N.Y.
