STORRS, Conn. - The Boston University field hockey team once again gave a top-10 team all it could handle, but ended up on the short end of a 3-1 decision at No. 7 Connecticut on Wednesday evening at the Sherman Complex. Freshman Jacinda McLeod gave the Terriers (7-9) an early 1-0 lead, but the Huskies (15-2) rallied back to earn the win.
The Terriers were the first team all season to outshoot UConn, recording 19 shots to the Huskies' 13. UConn goalkeeper Andrea Mainiero was forced to make a season-high 12 saves, while junior Amanda Smith made a career-best eight saves for BU.
BU controlled the run of play in the opening stages of the game and opened the scoring in the 11th minute on its second corner of the evening. McLeod blasted the ball to the boards from the top of the circle on assists from senior Haley Robinson and junior Allie Dolce.
Under eight minutes later, the Huskies knotted the contest with a corner goal of their own, as senior Loren Sherer scored her nation-leading 24th goal of the year.
The Terriers recorded nine shots on goal in the opening half, but Mainiero saved eight of them, and UConn was able to take a 2-1 lead into the break thanks to a goal by Melissa Gonzalez at the 26:34 mark off a corner.
BU held a 10-7 shot advantage after halftime, but Mainiero and the UConn defense were able to withstand each scoring opportunity, including a great one in the 43rd minute.
UConn's Allison Angulo recorded a defensive save on a shot by Lloyd, but a penalty stroke was awarded. However, junior Maryette Stuart was unable to convert and it remained a one-goal contest.
The Huskies added an insurance goal at 54:47 off a corner when Angulo redirected a shot by Sherer into the cage. UConn held a 9-5 advantage in corners for the game.
BU will return to action on Saturday (Oct. 24) when it plays host to No. 18 Albany in a battle for first place in the America East standings. Both teams are a perfect 3-0 in conference play. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
