BOSTON - Having already clinched at least a share of the America East regular season title, the Boston University women's soccer team (11-5-2, 6-1-0 AE) will look to claim the crown outright on Sunday afternoon when it hosts UMBC (2-13-1, 1-6-0 AE) at Nickerson Field at 1 pm.
On Thursday night, BU learned it would be hosting a semifinal round of the AE Women's Soccer Championship as a result of Stony Brook's 4-0 loss to Maine. With that, the Terriers earned their seventh regular season title since 2000 and received a first-round bye.
The story of this season has been BU's diverse offensive lineup, which has produced a conference-best 32 goals. Thirteen different Terriers have scored and eight have tallied multiple goals. Sophomore Jessica Luscinski leads the team with 16 points on four goals and eight assists, and she is followed by seniors Emily Pallotta and Farrell McClernon with 14 points apiece.
McClernon's three points on Wednesday evening against Bryant pushed her into eighth among BU's all-time scoring leaders as she has now totaled 49 in her career, while Pallotta cracked the top ten on the list with 43. Luscinski's eight assists sit alone in fourth for a single season, and she is now three away from tying Deidre Enos' eight-year-old record.
Defensively, BU continues to live up to its stingy reputation, as it leads the league in goals-against average (0.70) and shutouts (10). Nationally, it ranks 44th and 32nd, respectively, in those categories. Senior Janie Reilly has been the backbone of this defense, raking up seven shutouts and a 0.55 GAA, which ranks 23rd in the NCAA.
UMBC is looking to snap a three-game losing skid after picking up its first conference win of the season against Hartford, 1-0, on Oct. 11. Sandra Vacarino leads the squad with four goals and two assists for 10 points, and Danielle Kell is close behind with two goals and two assists for six points. Mo Van Vlerah has seen the majority of time in net and has amassed a 2.83 GAA and .702 save percentage.
Prior to the start of the contest, the Terriers will honor the accomplishments of their eight seniors - Casey Brown, Taleen Dimirdjian, Mikaela Hansen, Farrell McClernon, Mara Osher, Emily Pallotta, Laura Schwartz and Janie Reilly. This group has posted an impressive record of 50-23-9 overall, and a phenomenal 26-3-1 in conference record to date. In addition, they have won two America East Conference Championships and have played in the NCAA tournament every season of their career.
Following Sunday's game, BU will have a week off to prepare for the 2009 America East Women's Soccer Championship semifinals, which it will host on Sunday (Nov. 1).
