CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - In the final home game of the regular season, the Boston University field hockey team dropped a 2-0 contest to Providence on Friday afternoon at Jack Barry Field. With the loss, the Terriers fall to 7-11 with one road America East game remaining before the start of the conference tournament, while the Friars improve to 9-9.
The Terriers had six penalty corners in the first half and nine total but couldn't put one in the net, as Rachel Chamberlain recorded 11 saves to earn the shutout. The Friars only had three corners but were able to convert on two of them.
At 22:17, Julie Ruggieri deflected in a rebound off a blocked shot from Kelly Grogan. In a nearly identical situation at 40:31, Nellie Pulin deflected in a shot by Adrienne Marois to put the Friars ahead, 2-0.
For the final 12:58, head coach Sally Starr chose to empty BU's net and use an extra offensive player in hopes of applying more pressure on the Friars. The Terriers maintained possession of the ball on Providence's side of the field for the rest of the game but just couldn't get a break, as the Friars stopped BU's five shots to preserve the victory.
BU's Nikki Lloyd led all players in her final game at Jack Barry Field with five shots, while Poulin and Marois each had three for Providence. Keeper Amanda Smith had three saves for the Terriers, as they finished the game ahead in shots, 18-9, and in corners, 9-3.
Before the game, the Terriers held a ceremony for Lloyd and her fellow departing seniors Sheena Berry, Gabby Hajjar and Haley Robinson.
They conclude the regular season on Sunday (Nov. 1) at Maine with the start time set for 1 p.m.
