BOSTON - Following a three-game road stretch, the Boston University women’s basketball team (3-5) returns to the confines of Case Gymnasium to host Marist (4-4) on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. The Terriers will be looking to end a two-game skid, while the Red Foxes are coming off an overtime loss to No. 16 Oklahoma.
THE TERRIERS: The Terriers enter Saturday’s showdown after a three-game tour of the Ivy League, where they went 1-2 with their lone victory coming against Brown, 87-58, during that stretch. In those three contests a trio of underclassmen shined as sophomore Alex Young strung together a series of impressive scoring performances, averaging 20.3 ppg against the Ivy League. Freshmen Chantell Alford and Caitlynn Moran tallied 13.0 and 12.3 ppg, respectively, during that time frame.
For the season, Young is the team’s leading scorer with 14.3 ppg, while Moran and Alford are close behind with 13.8 and 10.9 ppg, respectively. Sophomore Caroline Stewart is the squad’s top rebounder with 6.0 rpg and senior Aly Hinton has also been a presence on the boards with 5.8 rpg.
BU is shooting .390 from the field and .288 from behind the arc, while it has averaged 37.6 rpg.
THE RED FOXES: Marist is coming off an impressive showing against the 16th-ranked Sooners. The Red Foxes led by as many as 10 points in the second half, but Oklahoma came back to push the game into overtime, where it went on to claim the nine-point victory. In the game, Marist’s all-time leading scorer Rachele Fitz scored her 2,000th point as a Red Fox, backed by a team-high 25 points. For the season, Fitz is averaging 22.1 ppg to rank in the top 10 in the nation in scoring. She is shooting .634 from the field to rank eighth, while also leading the team in rebounding (8.4 rpg). Erica Allenspach and Corielle Yarde are also averaging double figures with 13.6 ppg and 10.1, rpg.
Marist has been strong from the free throw line this season to rank second in the NCAA with an 81.3 average from the charity stripe. In addition, the Red Foxes have not turned the ball over very often with just 14.6 miscues per game to rank 12th in the country.
LAST TIME OUT VS. MARIST (Dec. 13, 2008): Marist’s Rachele Fitz netted 24 of her game-high 28 points in the second half to lead Marist to a 73-62 victory over BU on Saturday, Dec. 13, 2008 at the McCann Center. Jesyka Burks-Wiley led with a team-high 17 points, while Christine Kinneary recorded a double-double with 15 points and a career-high 11 rebounds. The Terriers outscored the Red Foxes 16-10 off turnovers and put up 16 second-chance points to Marist’s nine, however, the home squad got 30 points in the paint and 13 from its bench. After holding Fitz to just four points in the first half, the Red Foxes’ leading scorer exploded for 24 second-half points to finish with a game-high 28. Burks-Wiley was 6-fo-17 from the field and brought down five boards, while Kinneary was 3-for-10 and made eight free throws. It was a tightly contested match-up with both teams remaining within either one or two possessions for the majority of the game and BU took an eight-point lead with seven minutes remaining in the game. However, a resilient Yale side chipped away at the deficit and reclaimed the lead with less than two minutes remaining to hold on for the slim four-point victory.
Moran led the way with 18 points on 4-for-10 shooting and a career-high nine made free throws. She also tied sophomore Caroline Stewart with a team-high seven boards.
