December 2, 2009 | Women's Basketball
Providence, R.I. - Alex Young had an impressive night on Wednesday as the sophomore guard poured in a career-high 33 points for the Boston University women's basketball team (3-3) as the squad defeated Brown (2-5), 87-58, at Pizzitola Sports Center. Young, who was the first Terrier in nearly a year to score 30 points, led four players in double figures.
Young is the first Terrier to reach 30 points since Jesyka Burks-Wiley accomplished the feat last year at Maine when she netted 32. In addition to Young, senior Aly Hinton scored in double digits with 16 points, and she was followed by Caitlynn Moran with 11 and freshman Chantell Alford with 10 points apiece.
Young was 10-for-15 from the field, 5-for-6 from behind the arc and a perfect 8-for-8 from the charity stripe. Her 33-point performance is the second highest in the conference this season. Alford recorded a team-high four blocks, while Moran dished out five assists.
As a team, BU shot 46.7 percent from the field and outrebounded Brown, 35-32. BU outscored Brown, 30-20, on turnovers and 17-11 on second-chance points.
The Terriers jumped out to a quick 9-0 lead in the first three minutes of the game, with six points coming from behind the arc by Moran. They went on to extend it to 21-3 by the 12:17 mark, as Young took over hitting 4-of-4 free-throw attempts and nailing four points in the paint, while Alford drove to the basket for her first bucket of the game. In the early going, Aileen Daniels was Brown's top scorer as she was 3-for-3 from the line and scored one of the Bears' only two field goals in the first ten minutes.
Young matched a career high by the eighth minute on her third trey of the game to reach 19 points and she continued to be lights out from the field as she kept hitting her free throws and pulled up for a mid-range jumper at 3:47 to extend the Terriers lead to 35-14.
At the half, BU enjoyed a 45-20 lead, backed by an impressive 14-for-16 performance from the free-throw line and 23 first-half points from Young, who was 6-for-7 from the field, 3-for-3 from behind the arc and a perfect 8-for-8 from the line. As a team, BU shot 46.4 percent from the field and outrebounded Brown, 19-11.
In the second half, the Terriers stretched their lead to over 30 points, 68-35, with 11 minutes remaining in the game as Moran and Hinton combined to score 14 second-half points in a nine-minute span.
BU extended it to nearly 40 points, 84-49, when Young nailed her fifth trey of the game at 3:26 and they went on to complete the 29-point victory. Brown's Christina Johnson ended the game with a team-high 19 points, scoring 14 in the last five minutes of the contest.
The Terriers will continue their tour of the Ivy League on Sunday afternoon when it makes the short trek to Harvard (Dec. 6) at 2 p.m.
