HANOVER, N.H. - Sophomore Giovanna Monaco knocked in a rebound in the 61st minute to break a scoreless tie and lead the Boston University field hockey team to a 1-0 road victory over Dartmouth on Sunday afternoon at Chase AstroTurf Field. The Terriers complete a two-win weekend following Saturday's triumph over Sacred Heart and now stand at 3-5 on the year.
BU outshot the Big Green (1-4), 16-4, including a 10-1 margin in the second half, but did not get on the board until its eighth corner of the game with just under 10 minutes left in regulation. After a shot from the top of the circle by freshman Jacinda McLeod was saved, Monaco was there for the rebound and knocked it in at 60:10.
Junior goalkeeper Amanda Smith stopped both shots she faced to earn her first shutout of the season. Meagan Vakiener recorded eight saves in goal for Dartmouth.
BU doubled up the Big Green in corners, 10-5, and allowed the home team just one shot and one corner after halftime. Dartmouth pulled its goaltender for the final 2:01 of regulation but did not threaten on the other end.
The Terriers will return to action on Friday (Sept. 25) when it travels south to face No. 5 Virginia for a 6 p.m. contest. BU has defeated the Cavaliers in each of the past three seasons.
