BOSTON - Featuring eight squads that competed in the 2010 postseason, the Boston University women's basketball program and head coach Kelly Greenberg have unveiled their 2010-11 complete schedule. Following a 13-game non-conference schedule that boasts two teams that finished last year in the AP top-20, BU will open its conference slate at Case Gym against Maine on Jan. 2. In 2009-10, the league featured three squads in the postseason for the second consecutive year.
The Terriers, the 2010 America East Conference preseason favorite, will take on squads from the ACC, Big 12, Big East and Atlantic-10. Highlights include the home opener versus the Eagles (Nov. 12), an early December road match at six-time MAAC champion Marist (Dec. 11) and a pair of games against Big East foes St. John's (Dec. 4) and Providence (Dec. 31). The Terriers will also make an early-season road trip to Texas, where it will take on the Longhorns on Nov. 21.
Over Thanksgiving break, BU will take part in the Long Island Turkey Classic on Nov. 26 and Nov. 27 in Brooklyn, N.Y. In addition to BU and LIU, Colgate and McNeese State are set to appear at the two-day tournament. On Dec. 1, BU will travel to URI before hosting St. John's (Dec. 4), which is coming off one of its best seasons in program history as it went 25-7 overall, 12-4 in the Big East and advanced to the NCAA second round to finish 15th in the final rankings.
Next up for the Terriers will be perennial in-state foes Northeastern (Dec. 6) and Massachusetts (Dec. 8). Three days later, they will travel to Poughkeepsie, N.Y., to take on Marist, which is coming off its sixth MAAC title and seventh straight regular-season crown. Following a 17-day break, BU will return to the hardwood for a pair of road games against postseason participants Richmond (Dec. 28) and Providence (Dec. 31).
In January, BU will begin its quest to return to the America East championship game for the seventh time in the last nine years when it hosts Maine on Jan. 2 at Case Gym. Last year, AE champion Vermont and runner-up Hartford earned bids to the NCAA tournament, while Terriers advanced to the WNIT. The Terriers will also welcome UMBC (Jan. 17), Hartford (Jan. 23), UNH (Jan. 29), Albany (Feb. 9), Stony Brook (Feb. 20) and UVM (Feb. 26) to Case Gym and Binghamton (Jan. 26) to Agganis Arena throughout the conference slate.
The 2011 America East Championship will return to Hartford's Chase Arena at the Reich Family Pavilion from March 3-6. It will mark the ninth time in the last 10 years that the Hawks have hosted the event and the second consecutive time the women's championship will be combined with the men's. The highest remaining seed will host the championship game.
Greenberg returns 10 letter winners from last year's squad, including 2010 America East Rookie of the Year Chantell Alford. Alford, an AE All-Conference First Team selection, had a banner year as a rookie as she stepped into a starting role early on and went on to break the freshman scoring record (447 pts.), previously held by BU's all-time leading scorer, Katie Terhune ('01).
Alford, sophomore Mo Moran and junior Alex Young were linchpins in the Terriers' lineup and were rewarded at season's end with all-conference nods. The trio helped lead the Terriers to their second straight appearance in the WNIT for the first time in program history and have been named to the AE Preseason All-Conference Team.
