BROOKLYN, N.Y. - A game-changing 13-0 run midway through the second half, lifted Long Island (4-1) over the Boston University women's basketball team (2-4), 71-59, on Saturday night in the championship game of the LIU Turkey Classic. Sophomore Chantell Alford led the Terriers with 18 points.
The Blackbirds' Kiara Evans came off the bench to score 22 second-half points to aid the host school in their come-from-behind victory and earn tournament MVP honors. For the Terriers, Alford averaged 18.5 ppg, and 4.0 rpg to go along with five steals to make the all-tournament team. Over the two-day tourney, Cashman contributed eight blocks - including a career-high five on Saturday - 18 rebounds, and 17 points to also make the all-tournament team.
Against LIU, junior Alex Young contributed 15 points and sophomore Mo Moran chipped in 10, while junior Caroline Stewart hauled in a team-high 10 boards. As a team, BU shot 30.4 percent from the field and 77.7 percent from the charity stripe.
Five of the Terriers first seven buckets were treys as they led 19-11 eight minutes into the contest, led by Moran with eight points and Alford with six. However, a 10-2 LIU run knotted the game at 21-21 with just over six minutes remaining in the stanza as the score would remain tied for nearly three minutes until Young hit all three of her free-throw attempts to take back the lead, 24-21.
Cashman hit two more freebies, Alford nailed a trey and Moran scored on a putback as BU went on a 10-0 run of its own and held the Blackbirds scoreless for six minutes to claim a 10-point lead, 31-21, with two minutes remaining in the stanza.
Heading into the locker rooms at halftime with the score 31-24, Moran led all players with 10 points, while Cashman had a strong presence on the boards with seven rebounds to go along with three blocks.
To start the second half, BU outscored the Blackbirds 7-2 to claim a 12-point advantage, 38-26, but a quick 13-0 spurt over the course of one minute by LIU gave it its first lead of the game, 42-40, at 14:32 - one it would not relent for the remainder of the game. Over the next eight minutes, however, both teams remained within one possession of each other, until LIU took a seven-point lead, 56-49, after BU got into foul trouble, sending the Blackbirds to the line. Alford made a couple of clutch baskets down the stretch to keep the Terriers in the game and with 2:26 remaining they trailed 60-55. Over the last 2:26, the Blackbirds outscored the Terriers 11-4 to distance itself and round out the scoring at 71-59.
BU will return to action on Wednesday (Dec. 1) when it takes on URI in Kingston, R.I. at 7 p.m.
