BOSTON - The Boston University women's basketball team (2-4) returns to the hardwood on Wednesday night (Dec. 1) when it heads down to Rhode Island (3-3) for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
THE TERRIERS: BU is led by two players who are averaging double figures - junior Alex Young with a conference-best 17.5 ppg and sophomore Chantell Alford with 12.0 ppg. Young has been on a scoring tear with a 16-game double-figure scoring streak that dates back to Jan. 28, 2010. Additionally she has hit at least one 3-pointer in each of the last 14 games. Just a sophomore, Alford recently surpassed the 500 career point milestone on Nov. 26 vs. Colgate - picking up right where she left off as a rookie when she broke the freshman scoring record.
Senior Kerry Cashman is also having a banner season as she is averaging a career-best 9.2 rpg to go along with 11 blocks. Against Long Island on Nov. 27, she blocked a career-high five en route to earning all-tournament team honors.
As a team, BU leads the America East Conference in four categories: blocked shots (4.5 pg), assists (14.0 pg), steals (9.8 pg), and assist/turnover ratio (0.9).
BU VS. RHODE ISLAND: The BU-URI rivalry dates back to Feb. 27, 1978, a 58-34 BU loss in Rhode Island. The series continued through the 1980s with the Terriers and Rams splitting, 5-5. BU and URI renewed the rivalry in 2006 in Kingston, R.I., with the Terriers taking home an 82-66 victory. The past three seasons have resulted in three more wins - a 77-56 triumph on Nov. 13, 2007, a 50-45 win on Nov. 14, 2008, and last season's 47-35 victory on Nov. 18, 2009 - to give BU the 9-6 advantage in the all-time series record.
LAST TIME OUT VS. RHODE ISLAND (NOV. 18, 2009): A balanced scoring attack and stellar defensive effort helped the women's basketball team to a 47-35 win over Rhode Island on Wednesday, Nov. 18, in the home opener at Case Gym. Kat Briggs, Caroline Stewart and Mo Moran each scored eight points for the Terriers.
BU allowed fewer than 40 points in a game for the first time since Feb. 27, 2008, when the Terriers beat UNH, 66-39. BU forced 32 turnovers as Moran, the America East Player of the Game, and Maggie McKemie ('10) each tallied three steals. Stewart pulled down seven rebounds in the wire-to-wire victory.
Lara Gaspar posted a double-double for the Rams with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Megan Shoniker scored a game-high 13 points and Caitlin Kearns grabbed 13 boards for URI.
NEXT UP: BU will host Big East foe St. John's at Case Gym on Saturday, Dec. 4.
BLOCK PARTY: On Nov. 27, led by senior Kerry Cashman with five blocked shots, BU recorded 10 blocks in a game for the first time in 27 years. The last time a Terrier side swatted as many shots was on Jan. 25, 1983 against Rhode Island. It was four blocked shots off from a single-game school record.
MORAN'S TRIPLE-DOUBLE 1-OF-6 IN NATION: Sophomore Mo Moran's triple-double on Nov. 17 vs. Yale is one of only six in the NCAA this season. Brittany Griner (Baylor), Brandy Baker (Central Michigan), Amy Jaeschke (Northwestern), Chucky Jeffery (Colorado), and Mekia Valentine (UC Santana Barbara) have also accomplished the feat.
CASHMAN REBOUNDING STREAK: Senior Kerry Cashman hauled in 10 boards in three straight games (Yale, Texas, Harvard), marking the first time in her career that she has reached double-figure rebounds in consecutive games.
STEWART REACHES 300 BOARDS: Junior Caroline Stewart recently reached the 300-rebound mark and now stands at 327. Stewart accomplished the feat vs. No. 17 Texas on Nov. 17, while teammate senior Kerry Cashman is a mere 18 boards away from the milestone.
ALFORD SURPASSES 500 CAREER POINTS: In just her second season as a Terriers, sophomore Chantell Alford has already surpassed 500 career points. She is the first Terrier to reach 500 points as a sophomore since Aly Hinton ('10) accomplished the feat during the 2007-08 season.
SEEING DOUBLE: Junior Alex Young has reached double-figure scoring in each of the last 16 games - dating back to Jan. 28, 2010.
YOUNG'S 3-POINT STREAK: Young has also hit at least one 3-pointer in each of the last 14 games - dating back to Feb. 10, 2010. During that span of time, she has sunk 40 treys.
ROAD STRETCH: BU is in the midst of a stretch of games where it will play seven of nine contests on the road. Thus far, the Terriers have finished the LIU Turkey Classic in Brooklyn, N.Y., and will next head to URI before hosting St. John's (Dec. 4). After that, they will travel crosstown to face Northeastern (Dec. 6) before welcoming UMass on Dec. 8. To close out the non-conference slate, BU will hit the road for three straight games - Marist (Dec. 11), Richmond (Dec. 28), and Providence (Dec. 31).
