BOSTON - Senior Kerry Cashman along with juniors Caroline Stewart and Alex Young have been named captains for the 2010-11 Boston University women's basketball team, head coach Kelly Greenberg announced on Thursday.
The trio will lead a seasoned squad that just last season exceeded preseason expectations to finish third in the league and earn its second straight postseason bid to the WNIT. Last week, the 2010-11 edition was named the America East's preseason favorite to win the conference, following a vote of the conference's head coaches.
"We are thrilled to announce that Kerry, Caroline and Alex will be our captains for the upcoming season," said Greenberg. "The three of them work extremely hard on a daily basis, they understand what it takes to be successful and they have a tremendous amount of pride for BU basketball."
Cashman started 26-of-31 games as the team's center and its main shot blocker. She swatted a team-high 36 shots in 2009-10 - including three games of four blocks - to finish sixth in the conference in that category. She averaged 3.2 ppg and 4.0 rpg.
Last year, Stewart started 27-of-31 games and became BU's leading rebounder as she averaged 7.3 rpg, including 148 defensive boards. On March 5, against UMBC she brought down a career-high 15 rebounds in the America East quarterfinals. She owned BU's top two single-game highs of the 2009-10 season with her 15 against UMBC and another 14 vs. the Retrievers on Feb. 24.
Young blossomed as a sophomore, averaging 14.5 ppg, 3.7 rpg and 1.9 apg as she went on to earn America East All-Conference Third Team honors. The Hickory, N.C., native is the Terriers' go-to perimeter shooter, connecting on 58-of-169 3-point attempts last year, which moved her into 10th all-time on BU's career leaders list for 3-pointers (83). In addition, she had one of only three 30+ point performances in the league last year.
BU kicks off its season next Friday (Nov. 12) when its hosts Boston College at 5 p.m. at Case Gym.
